just googled various actors and got me thinking, these actors, IE Bill Bailey, my age, Their work is not continuous. how do they survive?

They "rest".

Slartybartfast · 26/08/2018 05:56

And research I guess

I get your point but Bill Bailey was a poor example! He never stops working and is worth over $7m!

AsleepAllDay · 26/08/2018 06:15

Someone like Bill Bailey probably writes and pops on quiz shows etc. I imagine he has quite a hard working agent as he's always doing something, and probably doesn't have to audition because he's got good face recognition and also writer mates who can write parts just for him

Koalablue · 26/08/2018 06:16

I think some are in theatre or back stage roles that dont appear on imdb.

OliviaStabler · 26/08/2018 06:16

I knew an actress who had a day job but they allowed her time off for any acting parts she secured.

Slartybartfast · 26/08/2018 06:18

Think of someone else? Not Olivia Colman, because she, too, is always working.
Vanessa Kirby? ok she has made it pretty big following The Crown,
Julia Davis?

Dylan Moran?

do they just try and keep fit and applying for jobs?

OP posts:
Slartybartfast · 26/08/2018 06:18

do you Olivia?
she is lucky
that is kind of what I mean.

OP posts:
TwoBlueShoes · 26/08/2018 06:19

Do you mean what do they do money wise or time wise?

Do you mean like successful actors or unsuccessful actors?

I heard that Rory McCann was working as a carpenter when he got cast as The Hound in GoT. I think a lot of unsuccessful actors have second jobs. Don’t they say that every waiter in LA is a budding actor? If they are successful they often tour when not filming, voiceovers, write books.

Slartybartfast · 26/08/2018 06:21

yes, both time and money, and successful and in between jobs

waitressing, yes that is what they say dont they, in America.

My uncle was an actor, not starving artist by any means, he has been in some recognisable things, but also not hugely famous, so no quiz shows etc.

He has minor roles in things like Casualty, soaps. Does some voiceover acting. Looks after his kids. He's written some stuff too and his wife is on a fairly good salary.

Slartybartfast · 26/08/2018 06:25

so they need to marry a rich person to survive? that's interesting Bertie

voice overs i spose, adverts,

Slartybartfast · 26/08/2018 06:28

behind the bar work? like Graham Norton?

walk their dogs?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 26/08/2018 06:34

Dylan Moran as in the highly successful comedian, actor, filmmaker with a net worth of $12m? Again not a lot of time off I suspect.

AsleepAllDay · 26/08/2018 06:36

Julia Davis writes and creates her own telly as well

I would suggest someone who mainly acts and doesn't have a creative sideline or is very famous - what do they do?

Ifailed · 26/08/2018 06:37

I suspect that for the vast majority, those that are not well-known, acting is a hobby that they work around.

Slartybartfast · 26/08/2018 06:41

ok so you have answered my question regarding specific actors but in general, what do they do

but also even with all the money and fame, how do they spend their time. is being in between jobs depressing?

OP posts:
TwoBlueShoes · 26/08/2018 06:42

Vanessa Kirby was in the latest Mission Impossible film and has been doing theatre. She’s from a posh family, so I doubt she will starve.

Lallypopstick · 26/08/2018 06:42

I often wonder about people who are no longer working. Like popstars from minor bands in the 90s. Can you go and get a day job when you've been on Top of the Pops?

TwoBlueShoes · 26/08/2018 06:45

When Stephanie Beacham was on Big Brother, she seemed to imply she had a lovely life in LA, walking her dogs, having lunch, that sort of thing.

It’s imposdible to answer your question because actors are so diverse.

Slartybartfast · 26/08/2018 06:45

that bloke from Bucks Fizz, I think, was laughed at for having a burger van.

I think that about moderately successful actors/presenters who drop off the tv screen and its only when they pop up again that you think “had forgotten all about them, haven’t seen them for ages”. There are thousands but for eg from the mn changing rooms thread the other day, Carol Smillie

HollyBollyBooBoo · 26/08/2018 06:55

I met carol smilie the other day! She's set up some sort of underwear line.

TwoBlueShoes · 26/08/2018 06:55

I read Zammo from Grange Hil is now working in a key cutting shop.

It seems some of the cast are still acting, some are not.
