Isn't it basically a guy telling a girl that saying she loves him isn't enough and she has to show it by shagging him.

I quite like that song. Always thought it meant saying “I love you” is actually the easy part but showing love in affection and actions, not “just words” is more difficult. Nothing creepy about it.

kenandbarbie · 25/08/2018 22:51

Yeah my dh said that. Hmmmm.

I always thought it was a typical jerky teen boy defence. "Oh I won't say I love you because if I did then I'd have nothing left"

More Than Words
Extreme

Saying I love you
Is not the words I want to hear from you
It's not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you
More than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
Now I've tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close don't ever let me go
More than words is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldn't have to say that you love me
'Cause I'd already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you

Ignore that too bit .... stupid copy and paste

But I agree - MEGA CREEPY

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/08/2018 23:05

Doesn’t it say something about when his heart his torn in two and she thinks they can start anew by saying “I love you”. Or something like that.

So I always imagined couples arguing and her thinking that all their disagreements should be forgotten just because she tells him she loves him. Happens all the time on the Relationship threads:

He treats me so horribly and gives me the cold shoulder then expects everything to be ok just because he apologises and says “I love you”. I’ve told him time and again that I can’t live like that, with him treating me like I mean nothing to him, then when he wants a shag he just says “I love you” and expects to get straight down to business. No foreplay, no loving hugs and real affection for me.

and then you get loads of people saying “he’s just saying what he thinks you want to hear so you’ll agree to keep shagging him when he wants to get his end away. That’s not real love ” etc etc

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/08/2018 23:09

Ie I think the woman in the song is messing HIM around, and thinking that just because she tells him she loves him he’ll forgive her. He knows really that it’s not real love even though they’re having a physical relationship.

lubeybooby · 25/08/2018 23:11

not remotely creepy... it's about affection, not sex!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/08/2018 23:16

Actually on a reread it could be construed as creepy. it could totally be a guy accusing his girlfriend of being a prick tease, not wanting to sleep with him yet and teasing him by saying “I love you” with the implied promise of sex soon because they love each other.

AnExcellentUsername · 25/08/2018 23:18

I think you're reading far too much into it.

Beelin · 25/08/2018 23:21

They are sex obsessed bastards, obv.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 25/08/2018 23:22

Eg “What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldn't make things new
Just by saying I love you”

Ie If I was really upset about something (not related to our relationship) then you could make it all better by having sex with me. If those 3 words didn’t exist then it’s the only way you could show me you loved me.

= creepy and coercive

And I’m totally overthinking this and wasting my Saturday night. Grin

Beelin · 25/08/2018 23:25

Yes. "Stop talking and do it with me."

Also, the rest of their songs are shit.

Needsleepneedsleep · 25/08/2018 23:29

Not creepy and definitely not as creepy as some other songs Tonight's The Night

MrsDarcyIwish · 25/08/2018 23:36

I watched an interview on youtube recently where Nuno explained that it was indeed about showing love, it being an action rather than a feeling type thing and not the pervy, coersive message I also thought it conveyed.
Can't remember if it was a recent interview or one from back then (I lost track while drooling🤣) and would no idea of how to post a link anyway, but the evidence is out there!

LilMadAgain · 25/08/2018 23:58

Don't care if it is creepy. The Jack Black cover was brilliant.

Crunchymum · 26/08/2018 00:07

Like a lot of songs, it just used words that rhymed Confused

There was no deeper meaning, just words that worked together.

Crunchymum · 26/08/2018 00:15

Actually I take it all back. Creepy as fuck. Very suggestive to "just giving in" against one's will

Jack Black and Jimmy Falllon were fab Grin

JaneJeffer · 26/08/2018 00:35

I took it to mean actions speak louder than words.
