Would anyone mind answering a quick question please who knows about cars?

Not a mechanic, but I'm mechanically minded and do most of my own maintenance. Fire away

fraggle84 · 25/08/2018 20:26

Thanks. Bit of an unusual one

My car was parked today and a car pulled in just behind it and was on fire

My insurance company is closed until Tuesday

My cars plastic around one sides window, spoiler, lights and bumper has melted but it was drivable

Is there any way to tell whether it's ok to drive? The fire brigade said it looked ok and tyre pressures fine but I'm just not sure

If the fire brigade are happy and the tyre pressures are holding I would think you'll be ok to drive, they know what they're talking about, but if you're planning a long journey it might be worth checking with a garage you trust. Are your lights melted so that they don't work though? That's something to think about. Do your insurance company not have a 24 hour claim line? They might be able to help and at least then it'll be logged as well.

Check your tyre pressures tomorrow morning when they're cold. Remove loose trim if possible. Get insurance details of other car/driver.

Dp is mechanic and says it will most likely be a write off from your insurance company as it has burn damage (yet to know of a car that has had burn damage that hasn't been written off).
He says difficult to say whether its safely drivable without seeing pics, but as long as all the lights at the back work you should be okay.

StorminaTCut · 25/08/2018 20:52

Do you have to drive it between now & Tuesday?

How bad is it?

fraggle84 · 25/08/2018 21:16

It's a motability car so they'll handle the insurance

Ideally yes but just short journeys for a few miles

It's a qashqai 2017 plate

Just not sure what to do

Can't find a 24 hour claim line, rang at 5 but they shut at 4 and don't open Sundays so presume they won't open bank hols either

I've got insurance details of the car that set on fire from the shopping centres security

It's all over local news and twitter and says 6 cars were badly damaged

Do your lights still all work right?

Is your license plate damaged?

fraggle84 · 25/08/2018 21:26

Lights work and reg plate is ok
