Has anybody had appendicitis. How did you feel and how bad was the pain?

I did when I was 12. Started on the Monday night with pain in the middle of my stomach, moved to the right side by the early hours of the morning. I was in too much pain to shout or move so lay there until my dad came in to wake me for school. The pain felt better when stomach held in at site of the pain then much worse when let go.
I had them removed by midday that day.

I was 16 and remember feeling terribly ill rather than the pain. Doctor said it wasn’t appendicitis and 24 hours later I was in hospital with peritonitis. My appendix wasn’t in the usual place, resulting in a huge scar.

Redglitter · 25/08/2018 20:39

I remember excruciating pain not being able to stand up straight & being sick.

I had it at about 12 years old too, started in late afternoon after P.E, like a sever stitch type pain on my right side. I could only lie about it hurt so much, severe pain all through night so was taken to doctors first thing in morning, who sent me straight to hospital. They confirmed appendicitis and I was operated on later that afternoon. I had no vomiting or fever which are common symptoms. If you're unsure go get checked out- mine was close to bursting - which can make you extremely unwell.

I was 10. Felt really ill at school on the Thursday, sent home after lunch. Saw the doctor Friday who thought it might be tonsillitis. By Friday night I couldn’t move and hadn’t held food down for 24 hours. Blue lighted to hospital Friday evening. Urgent surgery Sunday afternoon resulting in a huge scar as it was by then peritonitis and a lot of gunk to remove.

I had it when I was 38.
I woke up with a bit of stomach pain by the afternoon I was literally on my knees in the waiting room of A&E.
The pain started around my belly button and moved during the day to the lower right side.
The pain never subsided and just grew in intensity throughout the day. By the time I was in A&E I was vomiting after every sip of water and my nails had turned blue because I was panting from being in so much pain and not breathing properly.
The pain escalated very quickly and I just knew I needed to get to hospital.

redexpat · 25/08/2018 21:09

I was 13. Started in my chest and moved down and to the right. Was in quite a lot of pain for a long time. Have to say it was worse than childbirth for dc1 but better than childbirth for dc2.

I was 6 and was at a playscheme in the Easter holidays. I'd spent the day with a really bad stomach ache and it didn't stop. I ended up throwing up which then didn't stop. I was throwing up bile constantly.
My mum took me to the gp who said it was a virus and to take me straight home. It got worse. My mum called gp again and they said it's a virus. She took me to the walk in and the guy examined me and my step dad asked if it was appendicitis. He said no it's just a tummy bug even though I'd been throwing up for hours and was in agony on the right side. Mum took me home... even though the walk in was on site of the hospital on his advice. I was up all night crying and throwing up and in so much pain. Mum called the nhs number and they said it's just a virus. She called gp again in the morning and they said maybe take her to a and e to be on the safe side.
I didn't even do triage they took one look at me and took me straight to theatre. At which point it had burst and I almost died.
When I woke up my operating site started to leak this orange stuff everywhere. So I got rushed into theatre again and they had to put an open drain in my tummy. They also packed it with seaweed or something like that. O had a horrible green scab and was in hospital for almost a month. My scar is hideous and completely deforms my stomach.
If in doubt... go to hospital asap.

DH had it a few years ago. His was a strange one as they think it had been gradually perforating for a number of months before it actually got worse. He had several times where he felt like he'd pulled a muscle and several spells of feeling dizzy and sick. It got worse around 10.30pm one evening and he felt like he had really bad trapped wind and he couldn't sleep. He was pacing about the room, we saw the out of hours doctor who sent him straight to A&E. He'd had it removed by 10am the next morning. It had stuck to his bowel and was partially perforated and the op took twice as long as it should have done. He didn't have any sickness or excruciating pain, but he said it hurt when they pressed on it in the hospital.

Sandsnake · 25/08/2018 21:19

I was 16. That morning I felt like I had a stitch, quite high up in my abdomen. Got worse during the day and I remember lying down feeling sick shortly after I finished school. The pain got so bad that my parents set me up a bed in their room and then ended up calling the GP out late evening. He did the test where he pressed into the area and it wasn’t too bad but then released and it was complete agony - diagnosed appendicitis immediately. Went straight to hospital, stayed overnight and was operated on the next morning.

Hope all’s ok, OP.

FaithEverPresent · 25/08/2018 21:21

If you or someone close to you has bad abdominal pain, you should seek medical attention.

leighdinglady · 25/08/2018 21:22

I was 28 and had no pain. I just felt sick as a dog, diarrhoea and a temperature of 39 which caused me to violently shake. I went to A&E feeling very dramatic. They diagnosed me by pushing on where the A is

BlueRabbitWasNaughty · 25/08/2018 21:27

I had it a few years ago. Woke up in the middle of the night with stomach ache and feeling sick, up most of the night but thought it would feel better the next day.

I went to volunteer for an event but had to keep sitting down as my stomach hurt so much and by lunchtime was home lying on the bed in agony. My dh called 101 and they made me an appointment at A&E.

They suspected appendicitis straight away even though the pain was very central - apparently that's normal to start with. I was in agony, basically having to try and breath through it like childbirth until blood tests confirmed an infection and they gave me morphine. Horrible experience and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

BlueRabbitWasNaughty · 25/08/2018 21:34

Hope you're ok OP but if you've got bad stomach pain, get it checked out.

80Dodgeballs · 07/08/2021 15:38

When I was 9 I had it. Woke up on the morning after my brother's birthday. Felt a pain in my stomach, but thought it was nothing. Got worse throughout the day, by the evening my mum said that if it wasn't better soon she would take my to the hospital. Slept with her that night, threw up twice and I was taken straight to hospital. Once I got there I stayed in a hospital room, and then a few hours later was taken to surgery.

odey9621 · 07/08/2021 16:00

Doesn’t sound like what I have as it’s been on going for a week x

You'll get better responses if you start your own thread. Lots of people will only read the first post and respond to that.

I had a grumbling appendix for about a year before it became acute. It would flare up every month or so and I'd have a couple of days of pain/vomiting, then it would subside again. It never lasted as long as a week.

odey9621 · 07/08/2021 17:55

What is a grumbling appendix? I’m going to try not go back into hospital unless the pain stays and doesn’t go as all they seem todo it give me bloods and it never shows anything x

Kinsters · 08/08/2021 02:38

Chronic appendicitis that comes and goes. Mine came and went for a year before one month it didn't go away and I had my appendix removed.
