I don't like driving.

How can I overcome being such an anxious driver? I don't know why I worry so much but it's really holding me back going to new places. My main issues are going somewhere that may be busy or if I'm not sure what the parking situation will be like once I'm there. I hate parking under pressure! Plus I've been driving for about 15 years and never driven on a motorway! What can I do to build my confidence up?

Have you tried going on Streetview? You can have a virtual drive about before you go to a new place and check out the parking etc.

Re the motorway-book yourself a motorway lesson with an instructor?

I'm like you and really don't like driving and would avoid it wherever possible. Do you drive very regularly, or with long gaps in between? Recently I've had no choice in the matter, and have had to do a fair bit of daily driving, and the regular practice has made me much better. I had a fairly regular journey to the outskirts of a major city, and for the first couple of times I woke up in the night worrying about it, but now it's much better and my confidence has grown. If I know I am going somewhere new, I do the route on Streetview so that I know what lane changes/roundabouts etc are coming up. Motorway driving I actually prefer, as once you are on you can sit in the left hand lane and let everyone who wants pass you. You also don't have to worry about right hand turns and all that!

I also try and remember what my husband told me - if you can drive one mile, you can drive 100. I'm still crap at parking, though!

I would suggest you do a lot of parking practice when you're not under pressure to build your confidence.

As another poster said, a few lessons with an instructor for motorways will be very useful. I do think that is something which requires extra 'training'.

No advice I am afraid just wanted to say you are not alone in this! Passed my test 13 years ago, never driven on the motorway have only ever stayed within my comfort zone , which is very small ! I make up every excuse not to drive , roads are too busy, car is to big , quicker to walk , rather take the train my list is endless. Have to admit this is really limiting my life to the point I have enquiried about hypnosis, problem is i have to drive miles to the closest person who does it !
