Can you have a boy and girl called Ellis and Ella? X

Well of course you can do whatever you like, but personally I wouldn't as they are much too similar.

That's my concern. We have an Ellis and my OH loves the name Ella for the girl I am expecting. I wasn't sure at first, but the more he says it the more ok I am with it.
But is that because he keeps saying it!?

My mum said today that she thinks they're too similar and it's thrown me back into doubt x

They are similar but I think they both sound fine. If you like it then that's all the matters 🙂

I know someone who has grandchildren called Leia and Leah - who are cousins- and gets in an awful mess. I wouldn't, personally.

It would sound a bit like you thought they were a matching set. How about Bella?

Of course you can use any name as it's your child but I'd be wary as it sounds like you couldn't be bothered to think of a new name for her so have just given her the female version of your son's name.
