Chafer grubs probably - they live several years underground eating roots then emerge as May/June bugs for only a short time

EggplantInTheVestibule · 23/08/2018 18:47

I was going to guess cockchafer bugs too. Even before I saw the photo 😂

SoupDragon · 23/08/2018 18:50

Does it have little legs at the head end?

EggplantInTheVestibule · 23/08/2018 18:53

Thanks Saisong

I don't really want it to eat my blueberry roots. Shall I transfer them?

I dug them back up to look for legs - yes they do!

Thanks Soupy

Ha Soupy, I hadn't seen the picture before I posted either! We get them in our beds and pots too, I just chuck then on the grass for the robins.

If they are REALLY big then they may be Stag beetle larve, but it's unlikely in a pot.

EggplantInTheVestibule · 23/08/2018 19:35

About the size of a King prawn - the birds are going to have a feast tomorrow

Is this what a May bug starts off as? Amazing! Not so amazing when flying at you, though

SoupDragon · 23/08/2018 23:12

I had a gut feeling that it would be these revolting fellows - they are weird! The things they grow into are truly terrifying when they fly at you!

Time40 · 23/08/2018 23:35

That's so cute. I want one.

notsogoodhousekeeping · 24/08/2018 07:39

Please don't kill them, just transfer them to a flowerbed. They don't do much harm and they're in decline so need all the help they can get.

Vine weevil grubs on the other hand... Robins and blackbirds fill yer boots!
