What coat for yr7?

What coats are you buying your yr7? I've been looking at northface and Barbour for my son11. No kids seem to wear Superdry around here anymore, he wears age 11 but is slim.

DS1 is going into Y8. I bought him a black Jack Wills coat last year for school which he wore twice over the whole year because he hates coats and says nobody wears them at High School. Their blazers are ridiculously warm, though, so it probably isn't that cold without a coat.

I've bought him a new Schott parka as a winter coat but fully accept he won't wear it for school, it'll just be weekends/evenings when I can force him into it.

LoniceraJaponica · 23/08/2018 08:33

I would wait until he asks for one. It isn't "cool" to have a coat.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 23/08/2018 08:37

I wouldn't bother. I paid £140 for a coat for my son last year, he never wore it to school. In the snow he put a hoodie under his blazer, it's not cool to wear a coat!

They don't have a blazer at this school, it is just a polo shirt and jumper. Is it really uncool?

Wait.

Even if yuh have a DC whi wants to wear a coat, they won't need one before half term, by which time they should know what brands/styles are favoured in their schoo, and peer group. I'd they didn't care by that point, you can get whatever you think most suitable in school colour

Get a cheap cagoule or collapsible umbrella for wet days before it's cold.

JellySlice · 23/08/2018 08:43

They rarely wear coats in secondary.

Mine get a little umbrella or packaway light raincoat to keep in their bags in case of torrential rain.

When it's very cold they add hat/gloves/scarf/hoodie or down gilet under the blazer.

Obviously we have good winter coats for them, but they never take them to school. If they wanted a coat for school I would get a cheap coat, as their lockers aren't big enough to keep a coat in.

Hellywelly10 · 23/08/2018 08:44

Deffo wait till half term unless its very cold.

When DD goes into year 7, which will be next year, I'll do what I've always done, which is just buy her the coat she wants. Confused

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/08/2018 08:46

Ageee with the others, DS has a good light waterproof coat but I think he wore his actual coat once last year to school.

Like AuntieSteela says, I’d just wait Smile

JustlikeDevon · 23/08/2018 08:47

What pps all said. If your mum side can't wait then do not spend loads as it really won't get worn. Social death.

Peoplemaynoticeus · 23/08/2018 08:48

They don't have lockers in this school. I will scrap buying a coat for school, he does a packaway converse raincoat. Any suggestions for a nice winter coat without down? Thanks all Smile
