Is this suitable for work?

If you work in a smart-casual or semi-smart, non-corporate office, would you wear a red tartan skirt to work? (Assuming it's of an appropriate length and fit, of course). I'm not Scottish but there's lots of tartan coming in this season, but I also think that some people wouldn't consider red to be a work colour so I'm not sure about it.

You do realise this is stereotyping right?! You don't have to be Scottish to wear tartan.

LordEmsworth · 22/08/2018 18:49

Seriously? Red isn't a work colour?

There are work colours?

Since when?

wowfudge · 22/08/2018 18:50

Yes, why ever not? As long as you look smart it's fine. Office wear norms have changed over the time I have been working and it seems almost anything goes these days. You're overthinking things.

I think it would look lovely, really smart

Confused

You're hardly doing a Madonna by wearing a plaid skirt.

tinyradish · 22/08/2018 18:52

Yes I would.

A recruitment agent once told me off for wearing a purple shirt to a temp job, although it was many years ago. Sorry for checking and trying to do the right thing.

Nothing wrong with it as long as you wear smart, neutral colour top and tights, and black shoes.

Ooh yes. I used to have a fab tartan skirt which I wore with a fitted black polo neck, black tights and high heels.

FatCow2018 · 22/08/2018 19:00

Oooh I love tartan! Go for it! I wish I could wear skirts to work Sad

TroubledLichen · 22/08/2018 19:04

As long as you’re planning on wearing other clothes along with the tartan skirt then I’d say go for it Grin

I did temp reception/office work whilst at uni and it was always mandatory to wear a black suit, black or white smart top or shirt, nude tights and closed toe black heeled court shoes. Thankfully that doesn’t apply to the vast majority of other work places so I wouldn’t let the purple shirt incident cloud your judgement of suitable work wear!
