Where would you go if you needed a break away alone?

DH goes abroad every year for 4 days with friends. I have decided that I'd like to do the same but my friends are either skint or tied up with very young children. Should I forget the idea or find somewhere I could go alone? What would you do and where would you go?

I literally have no family to visit or go away with so it really would be a solo trip. Any suggestions appreciated!

Depends on your budget, what weather you prefer and activities you'd enjoy.

Personally I'dove to have a few weeks in Prince Edward Island, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

KateGrey · 22/08/2018 16:25

Oh god can I come?

I’d love to do more of the U.K. Northumbria, Yorkshire, Peak District. I’d also like to get to Ireland.

Abroad, Italy, Canada.

worried1254 · 22/08/2018 16:26

Budget would be £750 or less I think.

I've had no hobbies or interests since the kids came along Blush

Off to google that island!

I’d either do a big and busy city trip (A few days in London going to art galleries and museums etc) or the opposite and find a lovely hotel on a Scottish Loch or similar and read, go for walks, have afternoon tea and admire the view.

Nice food a must in either case Smile

WipsGlitter · 22/08/2018 16:27

I'd do a city break but in a really nice hotel with a spa.

Strawberrymelon · 22/08/2018 16:30

I think I would be happiest doing a city break where there is lots of sight seeing and plenty of places to eat in.

Mitzimaybe · 22/08/2018 16:40

It depends what you like doing. I went to Malaga on my own for 4 or 5 days; there are lots of museums and galleries if you like that sort of thing. Don't miss the (private) glass museum if you go - that's quite an experience. I stayed near the marina and ate at the harbour front restaurants in the evenings - dinner alone is the hardest thing for me but I found it OK there.

I got a 48 hour ticket for the sightseeing bus and that comes bundled with things like a guided walking tour, flamenco, lunch.

I also go on small group holidays (with companies like Explore, Exodus etc.) and normally get on fine with the other people on them. There are always others on their own - mostly women in my experience.

worried1254 · 22/08/2018 16:40

@WingMirrorSpider London does appeal actually - I once had a couple of days there alone in my early 20s and remember enjoying it but wonder if 4 days would be too much.

Good food will definitely feature!

Either...

Liverpool (where I grew up but I haven't lived there for nearly 30 years) where I would wander around the museums, the art gallery and the cathedrals in the daytime and spend the evenings in the bars and restaurants. Possibly best with at least one friend although I'm not adverse to eating on my own.

Or

A cottage on the north Norfolk coast. Preferably with views of the sea. I'd stock up with a boot full of my favourite food and wine, load up my kindle with books to read and take my crochet. Maybe also download some audiobooks just to hear another voice while I'm crocheting. If the cottage came with a cat it would be utter perfection.

worried1254 · 22/08/2018 16:42

@Mitzimaybe - I'll look into Malaga thanks. Yes, I enjoy sightseeing and museums. I'll be going in April so weather might even be nice in Spain then. I've ate alone for dinner on occasion throughout the last decade so I think I'd cope with that - agree it's easier in some places than others.

@TheWoollybacksWife - oh the Norfolk coast does appeal! I've always wanted to go and never have!! Love the idea of going in the car actually and loading up with comfort items 👌

Currently in a cottage in the Yorkshire Dales, would highly recommend it. It’s absolutely beautiful here, peace and quiet and stunning scenery. I’d buy a load of lovely food and hold up for a long weekend.

Doje · 22/08/2018 16:49

I did Berlin on my own for a couple of days. Loads to see and do. It's small enough to walk around so ideal for meandering with a map and stopping for pastries and coffee or a beer.

yummyeclair · 22/08/2018 16:52

Ditto OP!

handslikecowstits · 22/08/2018 16:54

Paris or Berlin for me.

Longdistance · 22/08/2018 16:57

Try Nice. Sunny, good food, beaches, shopping, easy to navigate around.

Saggital · 22/08/2018 16:59

Hire a small cottage on north Norfolk coast around Brancaster or Wells area, no further east. You can walk or kayak all day, on the beach, in the pine belts and it’s just you, the sea and the sky.

SweetLathyrus · 22/08/2018 17:00

If you like the idea of city breaks with lots to do, how about Bruges?

Easy on the Eurostar - local train from Brussels. It's a really walkable city, with loads of museums - beer, chocolate, and french fry museums. Art gallerys, picturesque streets to wander around - the boat trips are fun too. If it's Summer, the Belfry in Markt Square has Carillion concerts for free, really magical, and it's the tower from the climax of In Bruges (Love that film "Fecki'n shit hole"!).

Three or Four days would be perfect to get most things done.

Saggital · 22/08/2018 17:01

Oh and the pubs and restaurants are great - noticed you like food.

Go to Eric’s fish and chips when you arrive - a couple of miles past old Hunstanton.

Saggital · 22/08/2018 17:02

West Ireland is also tranquil. Hire a cottage above Inch Bay with panoramic views and the call of curlews to start every day.

Nandocushion · 22/08/2018 17:03

I went to Iceland

prettygreywalls · 22/08/2018 17:30

Brugge is lovely , lots to see , wander around and graze at the pavement cafes , boat ride on the river , buy some chocolate & beer to bring home , I've been a couple of times on my own and more recently taken partner along

Paris is easy on your own as well ( but more expensive than Bruges ) again lots to see and do

Madrid is easy to get around by regular bus or hop on hop off open top bus , some museums& galleries have free open evenings on set days of the week

Malta is very easy by bus to travel all over , loads to see , quite reasonable prices

Rome is beautiful as is sienna, Venice and Florence , all easy to walk around , use water taxi in venice and open top bus in Rome ,

Majorca is great

Istanbul is amazing

Now I want a trip !

theboxofdelights · 22/08/2018 17:31

I would go to north Norfolk too. I would stay at the Victoria at Holkham. Nice pub nice food, on the Holkham estate and a nice walk to the beach.

They have got lodges as well if you want self catering.

DMCWelshCakes · 22/08/2018 17:33

In the UK I'd go to Liverpool, Manchester or York I think.

In Europe - Salzburg, Stockholm, Helsinki or Berlin

PollyFlinderz · 22/08/2018 17:33

Copenhagen or Barcelona.
