Where would you go if you needed a break away alone?

DH goes abroad every year for 4 days with friends. I have decided that I'd like to do the same but my friends are either skint or tied up with very young children. Should I forget the idea or find somewhere I could go alone? What would you do and where would you go?

I literally have no family to visit or go away with so it really would be a solo trip. Any suggestions appreciated!

For £750 you'd get a cracking last minute deal somewhere hot and all inclusive in April, wait until about February then go into your local travel agent and see what they have, just avoid the Easter holidays.

Sri Lanka, Malaysia..... most of the rainy seasons around the Indian Ocean don't start in earnest til about May, anything in April would be a short sharp burst.

Or Dubai, will be dryer then too.

Oh god what I'd give for a week alone in one of these places Grin

I love glamping in a shepherds hut or similar on my own - they're a lovely cosy size, self catering so you can stock up on food, prosecco, good books or go walking, I like Yorkshire or Cumbria or the Lake district. Similarly cute or quirky b and bs rather than big anonymous hotels. I love getting away on my own for a few days

You could definitely fill 4 days in London. Ditch the tube and walk wherever possible - you see much more. There’s loads to do

Lots of nice friendly people in N Yorks!

widgetbeana · 22/08/2018 18:59

Belfast and then Northern Ireland north coast. Gorgeous coastline with super friendly people. Belfast has a wonderful city feeling with lots to see, titanic quarter with lots of restaurants etc. Best of both worlds, city and countryside in the same tiny little island!

i went to edinburgh for three days on my own and had a whale of a time lots of museums during the day, ghost walks at night, and i ate in the hotel

I like the Algarve when I need a 4 break on my own. The Eva hotel in Faro is comfortable, with a gym and lots of classes in the basement. Simple, not pretentious. You can go on day trips from the bus station which is 4 mins walk. Be sure to book a sea view room. Room service is good and it's easy to eat out alone in Faro as there are lots of local workers eating alone too. This is the view from my terrace. The airport is a 15 min taxi ride away and abour €20. Or hire a car if you enjoy driving.
Do it OP! Travelling alone is so good for you! Peace and relaxation...

I went to Thyme Hotel in the Cotswolds for a few days on my own, it was pretty blissful and the food is utterly amazing and all grown on site. I went for the spa, sadly it wasn’t ready yet despite the website saying so when I booked Angry but it looks incredible now it’s done.

Alone and abroad for that budget I’d go to Budapest. Felt so safe waking down the streets at night. No hassle, no issues and a lovely city. Cheap for food and drink too.

Money no object and I’d be in New York like a flash. I love that city.

MorrisDancingViv · 22/08/2018 19:12

I really enjoyed Madrid and would love to return but I'd probably go somewhere like Barcelona/Valencia/Malaga so that I could do some sightseeing plus a couple of afternoons on the beach.

Kathsmum · 22/08/2018 19:13

I used to go away with a group called Walking Women, all levels, budgets & dates for single women including photography, skiing etc

Totally recommmend them.

Seniorschoolmum · 22/08/2018 19:14

Scilly Isles. You can island-hop, eat seafood, cycle, wander round Tresco gardens. Drink too much and have lie-ins. You don’t need a car. You could go by helicopter on that budget.

Jenala · 22/08/2018 19:17

Rome is great. Any European city pretty much. Stockholm is amazing too. Copenhagen. Paris. 4 days is a nice amount of time for a city break imo.

I'm jealous. Maybe I should go away on my own.

buckingfrolicks · 22/08/2018 19:18

Rome.

PineappleLava · 22/08/2018 19:20

I can recommend this, a fabulous Art Deco little boutique hotel in Cannes. The beach access deal is excellent if you’d also like to chill out.
Cannes is very easy to get to from Nice airport, and it’s also lovely to wander round. You could also get the train to Monaco for the day, or Nice, or Antibes etc....

I’d go on a cruise!
Love cruising with DH, but quite fancy doing one by myself. Always a lot of solo travellers on a cruise- often very interesting people.
I’d do the Transatlantic crossing - totally relax during the day, spa, reading, talks, lectures films and then enjoy dinner in the evening.

Rarfy · 22/08/2018 19:23

York and tbh id rather thay and treat a friend for a little company too. Lovely shops pubs restaurants and lots of touristy things to do. Everything quite central and in walking distance.

Flowersonthewall · 22/08/2018 19:23

This thread is making me yearn for a few days on my own!

Autumnfairy82 · 22/08/2018 19:25

A cottage in the Lake District.

MrHecklesOboe · 22/08/2018 19:31

I would do Italy I think! Palma, Bologna and Verona are all faves of mine and I also really want to go to Sicily but haven’t made it there yet. I would spend the days wandering and sampling gelato and the evenings enjoying the wonderful food with a glass of wine and maybe a book. Heaven!

winterdeballesteros · 22/08/2018 19:33

I would get the sleeper train up to Scotland and find a nice B&B

GhostsToMonsoon · 22/08/2018 19:40

I've stayed in Lundy on my own. They have a couple of cottages that just sleep one person. (I didn't manage to get one this year, as they book up quite far in advance). It's very quiet and peaceful.

Would you prefer to be on your own or join in with a group? (Something along the lines of HF Holidays).

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 22/08/2018 19:40

I've done a UK city break in a proper hotel, a small town with interesting shops to potter in and a quirky B&B, and this year I'm going self-catering in an AirBnB in another small and interesting town. I LOVE hitting the motorway leaving all my responsibilities behind. I might venture across the channel next year, but I seem to have lost the confidence I used to have for going somewhere I only know the very basics of the language on my own.
