Have you ever left a day early or late for a holiday accidentally?

My friend packed up at the end of her holiday last week having lost count of the days and got as far as the airport before finding their flight wasn't until the next day.

At least they just had to go back to their hotel rather than being a day late and having no hotel room or flight. Bless her.

We turned up at a hotel last year to be told that I'd actually booked it for the night before. Thankfully they could fit us in that night!!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 22/08/2018 14:25

My sister used to manage travel - so many people used to get the 24 hour clock muddled and turn up at the wrong time.

DunesOfSand · 22/08/2018 14:46

Not yet....
Both Mum and I had my flight written in the calander for Thursday, despite the ticket saying Friday (in two different countries).
Lots of flights from here are very early in the morning - like 1am or 3am. Several people have been very close to missing flights - you need to book the taxi for the day before you fly.

borisinajohnson · 22/08/2018 14:46

I turned up 24 hours late for a flight. In my defence, the flight time was a few minutes past midnight....

NicoAndTheNiners · 22/08/2018 14:50

Better early than late I guess.

I remember on here some years ago a MNer was at home looking forward to her expensive villa holiday the following week. Big villa with loads of extended family flying out and the villa owner rang o ask why they hadn’t turned up.

Someone in the group had told everyone the wrong week.....can’t remember how it ended. But a lot of different couples were out of pocket. Not sure how well everyone took it!

I have booked a ferry the wrong way round, Ireland to England instead of England to Ireland. I noticed it when I checked the email the day before travel and felt sick at the thought that I'd messed up the holiday and could lose the £500 I'd paid out but the lovely ferry people managed to get us on a ferry in peak season the next day. We did have to travel at an awkward time but better that than losing all that money. I always get the 'flexi' tickets now.

AgentProvocateur · 22/08/2018 15:06

Yes, we had flights at 00.05 hrs. We arrived at the airport a day late. That was an expensive lesson learned! Astonishly, DH and I both looked at the timings and agreed on the wrong day.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/08/2018 15:14

No, but on one memorable occasion at the end of a blissful beach holiday, we were phoned very early to say sorry (!) but our flight that afternoon was going to be delayed by 24 hours. Cost of the extra day would of course be covered by the package operator.
And I hadn't even started packing anything, or picking up all the wet sandy things off dds' bedroom floor!

Talk about joy unconfined!

preggersteach · 22/08/2018 15:21

My friend arrived 12 hours late for a flight from Australia to the uk. It was nearly a very expensive mistake but they had empty seats on a later flight and let her have the spare seat at no charge

elmo1980 · 22/08/2018 15:29

When I was 12 my parents had booked us all a holiday to Spain via Brittany ferries. We arrived at the port no other cars around, had missed ferry by 2 hours! God knows how they did that.

We ended up going to Cornwall for 2 days before getting the next available ferry. They were too embarrassed to just go back home!

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 22/08/2018 15:30

A friend and I once turned up at the port to get the ferry back to England at the end of our holiday, only to find that she had booked the ferry for the day before. The woman at the ferry terminal was lovely and managed to get us on a boat later that day (she said it happens all the time!).

DragonScales · 22/08/2018 15:35

My lovely but notoriously scatty step mum has hundreds of these experiences! The last was a few weeks ago she came to visit us, we dropped her off at the airport, a few hours later saw on Facebook she'd only just checked into a lounge at Heathrow - turns out she'd booked the return flight for the 7th of Sept rather than 7th August.... So she'd had to go through the hassle of buying a new flight leaving that day.

She was once in charge of booking a family holiday to Spain - Valencia.... luckily df checked the booking after she'd made it. We all ended up having a lovely week in Verona - Italy....

When I was at boarding school I once returned a whole week too early and found the school still shut...

MardAsSnails · 22/08/2018 15:37

My friend did. Three separate times.

Two were as DunesofSand said - 2am flight. We always consider the 2am flight home as the Thursday night flight, despite it being 2am Friday. Unfortunately she told HR to book her the 2am flight on Thursday, knowing she meant Friday morning. It was booked for 2am thursday. Once she managed to realize when she got her 48 hour online check in notice 3 days early. Once she turned to at night night Thursday/Friday to be told she’d booked it 2am Saturday morning.

Third time, she managed to book completely the wrong fucking flight. Departure Friday 13th feb. return Friday 20th feb. why she actually booked was return Friday 20th March, so she turned up at the airport a month early, and it was a non-changeable flight. Cost her a new 1-way ticket from Germany to Dubai so about £700!

middleeasternpromise · 22/08/2018 15:37

Yes arrived for a fight to Belfast on Xmas eve only to find out my flight was the same time the day before! Had to go standby as flight was full they let me on 10 mins to departure someone else on bbc goulash didn't make it. Also took kids to a Haven holiday, admittedly I wasn't enjoying it tiny swimming pool, summer hols absolutely packed rained most days so was Gadsden it ended. Packed up the car and handed in the keys only to be told you aren't due to leave till tomorrow. I fell like I made that happen unconsciously.

itbemay · 22/08/2018 15:39

booked holiday all ok and managed to get on flights there and back but had booked the car in for an extra night at the meet and greet and the dog in the kennels... had to wait 4 hours for the car to be found and brought to us, dog was fine, he had another night in the dog hotel

BabiesComeWithHats · 22/08/2018 15:43

I very nearly set off a day late for a flight that crossed the international date line and I hadn't noticed. Was at 10 o clock at night when I realised and had to leave at 4 or something mad, but I made it!

squarecat · 22/08/2018 15:47

I worked out in France, at the end of the summer season the company provided train/ferry tickets home. I had an horrific train journey and got to Roscoff to see the ferry just dipping over the horizon. The timetable swapped that day from summer to winter, the next ferry wasn't until two days later. I had to unpick the lining in my coat and use the emergency funds my mum had stitched there for a hostel bed!

Moominfan · 22/08/2018 15:54

Yea we're stoned in Amsterdam. Went for our flights to find out they were next day. Checked out of hotel so couldn't get back in. Super skint so stayed in Hans brisket hostel which advertises itself as the worst hostel in the world. Shared a dorm where one girl was sick in the corner and a couple came back drunk and shagged

Moominfan · 22/08/2018 15:54

Brinker not brisket

GrumpySausage · 22/08/2018 15:59

Not me but...

Was reading trip advisor reviews and one negative review complained the holiday park had not given them the caravan they had booked and instead they got a caravan further away and it had ruined their holiday yada yada.

The holiday park has responded to say 'considering you had turned up a whole year early for your holiday we did very well to get you a caravan in peak season'. How did they have the nerve to complain! Grin

Nesssie · 22/08/2018 16:04

Not early/late but instead of getting our cruise ship to Spain, we accidently got on the Isle of Wight ferry... Managed to get across town to the correct boat with 34 seconds to spare (they had a lovely big clock counting down the seconds til cast off).

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 22/08/2018 16:05

Almost, we were due to travel down to bils to be collected by taxi on the Monday night. Dh was working Sunday and we were driving down early Monday. Luckily taxi rang to say see you at 7 tonight. Cue panic, rang dh at work, he got the time off luckily. Packing done by us, but ills were piling things in straight from dryer. Same holiday, bil wanted passport details to online check in and dds passport had expired. Mad rush to passport office. Was a relief to get there.

Crunchymum · 22/08/2018 16:23

Is it really that difficult to work out flights around Midnight?

Just say my flight is 00:05 on 24th August.... that is five minutes into Friday 24th - right?

Crunchymum · 22/08/2018 16:28

I did turn up to a nightclub early once. In Ibiza. We bought tickets for one of the big clubs and were told "it doesn't really get going until 6/7ish".... So got a cab to the club at 7pm to find it being cleaned Blush
(we were 18 but not massive ravers).... cue expensive cab home and then back again in the early hours of the next day Grin

DunesOfSand · 22/08/2018 16:40

Crunchy you are correct, the problem comes is then in your head you say "I'm flying Friday night" and you get in a mess. We do the same as Mard, and would say flying Thursday night for that flight.
