Me & DH - high temp but feel fine!

I have health anxiety so I am probably fretting unnecessarily, but could do with some reassurance please.
I just noticed DH felt a bit hot when I touched his face, so I took his temperature with an ear thermometer. It read 40.2!!
Panicking slightly, I took my own temperature just to check and that read 40.1.
We both feel fine, a little tired due to a few late nights and DH had a headache yesterday (but put that down to caffeine withdrawal as he hadn’t had a coffee all day which is unusual for him) but we feel otherwise ok.
Surely we’d be feeling quite poorly with temperatures that high? And isn’t it unlikely that we both have very similar high readings?
I changed the batteries in the thermometer in case they are faulty but it’s still giving the same readings.
Now I’m starting to imagine symptoms of feeling unwell I think (bastard health anxiety) and I’m also panicking as the last time DH had a temperature he ended up in hospital with urosepsis.
We are supposed to be going away for a couple of days tomorrow so now I’m starting to worry we’re coming down with something.
Like I say, we both feel ok, no other symptoms.
Would you worry with temperature readings like that?

Take some paracetomol and see if the temps come down. They probably will and then you can just accept that you have probably both picked up an annoying virus (not surprising that the both of you have it as you probably have kissed each other!). Summer viruses often have not many symptoms. Make sure you are both drinking lots of fluids and get to bed early and you will be fine

Some people just run hot?

Seeline · 22/08/2018 12:51

I'd try a different thermometer - with a temp that high you would be feeling very unwell.

Those are impressive temperatures for adults. Odd to be so hot and feel fine. Might be worth getting rechecked with a different thermometer. If true then probably some sort of virus as you both have it. The symptoms will then manifest shortly.

So we took paracetamol an hour or so ago and temperatures have come down slightly to 38.4, which I guess is still high but better than 40+
Isn’t it odd though that we feel ok and have no other symptoms?
How long will it take for whatever this is to develop into something do you think?
Or maybe it will just go away??
I’m really fretting about the next few days being ruined now. It’s DH’s birthday and we’re going away.

I dont want to make light of your symptoms but it really would be worth checking with a new thermometer. So many of us don't look after our thermometers properly and they can be easily damaged Smile

Blobby10 - I WANT someone to make light of my symptoms and tell me the thermometer must be broken!
I stress so much when me or my family get ill, I imagine all sorts of horrible worst case scenarios (had CBT for health anxiety but it didn’t help)
I’ll get a new thermometer I think. I’ve had this one for donkeys years since the DC were small.

I feel terrible with a temp of 38, so personally I find it hard to believe you’re both running temps of 40 and feel fine. I’d blame the thermometer but you said DH feels hot? Weird.

Just wanted to update those of you who were kind enough to reply to my op...
I think the thermometer is definitely dodgy as I just took my temperature again and it’s now reading 34 (and according to the NHS website that means I am gravely ill with hypothermia Grin )
I’ll get a new one!
Thanks again Smile
