Are they ok with their name? Do they get picked on?

Do you think it's a name that should be avoided?

Struggling with names, but we love this one. Worried about what future friends might say to him.

Woody is the name of the biggest bully in my kids school. It’s an awful name (I thought that before). If it’s not a euphemism for an erection it’s a cowboy doll. Terrible.

SinkGirl · 21/08/2018 20:18

Slight irony with the username there...

No, I would never call a child Woody

bloodyhouses · 21/08/2018 20:23

I know a Woody.
Cute, handsome little boy.
Very trendy and his mum is likewise.
A little bit hipster!

I thought a woody was an erection?

Lemonysnicketts · 21/08/2018 20:26

All I can think of is Toystory ...

WhatAnAbsolutePenis · 21/08/2018 20:26

I wasn't asking for opinions on the name, lots of people would hate my name, any name.
It was specifically whether they knew someone called Woody. That was the question.

And I did not make the user name connection, that made me laugh. GrinGrin

Comes across as if you are trying really hard to be trendy.

amusedbush · 21/08/2018 20:27

Absolutely terrible name. It’s either a toy cowboy or an erection.

Imagine a grown man called Woody Confused

Sar51 · 21/08/2018 20:27

Zoe Ball has a son called Woody - no idea what he’s like though!

fourquenelles · 21/08/2018 20:27

My second H was a Woody (surname Wood). He was a con man so I am a bit biased against it. It always struck me as odd that a grown man would have such a "childish" name.

PiggeryPorcombe · 21/08/2018 20:27

Yes I know a 10yr old Woody. No issues with the name to my knowledge.

JustGettingStarted · 21/08/2018 20:28

THERE'S A SNAKE IN MY BOOT!

Maireadd · 21/08/2018 20:30

I know of 2 — one about 10-11, one newborn. I dislike it personally, but it’s a legitimate name. I prefer Sonny, Monty, Ziggy, Rudy, etc. if you like that sort of hipster-cutesy style.

BigBlueBubble · 21/08/2018 20:31

I don’t know any British people called Woody but I met an American Woody once and there doesn’t seem to be the same stigma because (I think) only the British use it as slang for an erection?

BigBlueBubble · 21/08/2018 20:32

You could call him Edward and use Woody as a nickname? So he could switch to Ward or Eddie if he feels uncomfortable when he gets older?

Tailfeather · 21/08/2018 20:33

I know a Woody. Super cute. But too little to comment on whether he likes his name!

TheTroutofNoCraic · 21/08/2018 20:36

Taught one. Gorgeous little lad, cheeky sense of humour (a wee bit naughty at times) and very quirky. He really suited his name and couldn't imagine him as anything else. Never heard anyone make fun of him.
It was a naice, affluent village primary school though...not sure about how the name might be received in a different demographic or in secondary school.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 21/08/2018 20:37

And there are much, MUCH worse names out there. Woody is a cool name in my opinion.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 21/08/2018 20:38

I know one - not sure that he gets picked on for his name - he’s popular enough - but definitely on the more “alternative” side of the class / not in with the “cool” kids.

He’s the kind of kid who is pretty self confident, so to be honest, if he was being picked on, I’m not sure he’d care.

Singingitoverandoverandover · 21/08/2018 20:39

Nope done know any.
Just a woodpecker.

Growingboys · 21/08/2018 20:40

Doesn't Zoe Ball have a Woody?

Reason enough to reject it. But also: crap name. Sorry OP

Cheeseplantandpickle · 21/08/2018 20:40

I know a 12 year old boy called Woody and a 3 year old girl called Woody. Don’t think anyone gets picked on.

PoptartPoptart · 21/08/2018 20:43

I taught a Woody once, in yr6. He was a pretentious little so and so.

sixnearlyseven · 21/08/2018 20:48

I know one, he's only 3 and lovely. Too young to get picked on but ime kids just accept names in primary if they have always been used to them, it's in secondary any teasing would begin.

Failingat40 · 21/08/2018 20:54

THERE'S A SNAKE IN MY BOOT!
Grin

Love Toy story!

No I don't know any real life human called Woody.

I used to enjoy watching woody woodpecker cartoons though when I was a kid. I still remember that laugh.

I think you'll be safe to say he'll certainly be unique if you use that as a name.
