Are they ok with their name? Do they get picked on?

Do you think it's a name that should be avoided?

Struggling with names, but we love this one. Worried about what future friends might say to him.

It’s very American. Do they use it as a shortening of Woodhouse, as they like surnames for first names?

Pressuredrip · 21/08/2018 20:57

I love it, It was on our shortlist. A friend of a friend had one shortly after and I felt super jealous we didn't chose it. But I feel like just every time I hear our shortlist but unused names. I don't know any personally.

DS goes to Nursery with a Woody. He's really lovely.
Very cute and the name suits him. His full name is Edward but he goes by Woody.

I know an adult Woody, short for Edward. He's very attractive! So i think it's a great name Grin

OutPinked · 21/08/2018 21:14

“Got wood?” I wouldn’t want that name in secondary school.

TheWeatherGirl1 · 21/08/2018 21:20

I really like it.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 21/08/2018 21:21

Yep, had a woody in our year in 6th form, got the piss taken out of him regularly. Awful name!

AdultHumanFemale · 21/08/2018 21:24

I know you are not asking for opinions, but just want to say I love it! runs away

LARLARLAND · 21/08/2018 21:27

There are worse names but there are also better ones. I know that’s not exactly helpful Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 21/08/2018 21:29

Why not give him a normal name and then nickname him 'Woody'. It's an awful name to have and I say that as someone named after a capital city.

MrsMolehillMountain · 21/08/2018 21:30

Makes me think of an erection and Toy Story

confusedofengland · 21/08/2018 21:32

I know an Elwood (7), who occasionally gets called Woody. I also know of a 5-year old called Woody (but not sure if it's his given name or a nickname).

I also went to uni with somebody called Andy who we all knew as Woody, because he looked like the Toy Story character. I didn't actually realise his real name for ages Grin

I know a Woody - mate of my son, about to go into Y5, in SE London. He’s a delightful boy and I have never heard anyone (adult or child) say anything untoward about his name. I’d never even thought about any unfortunate connotations before seeing this thread! It wouldn’t be my choice but to me it’s a perfectly good, quite sweet name.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 21/08/2018 21:34

I know 2 adult men called Woody, but for both it's a nickname based on their surnames. Both use their proper names for anything formal.

PuntCuffin · 21/08/2018 21:34

I know one, where it is a nickname for Edward. Makes a change from various other derivations.

WhispersOfWickedness · 21/08/2018 21:42

I know one who is a friend of a friend's son. He's probably about 7 or 8.
Never heard a child comment on it, but we were at the same party as them once. There was a disco with an entertainer. He asked what his name was and when the child said his name, the entertainer said 'oh, I thought you just said your name was Woody, hahaha'. No, the parents confirmed, that was right. Luckily the entertainer managed to hold it together and said something along the lines of 'oh, wow, that is an awesome name!'...

Tiredmum100 · 21/08/2018 21:48

I know of a woody.

Cherubfish · 21/08/2018 21:50

I know one, he's about 14. Doesn't get picked on AFAIK.

Somerville · 21/08/2018 21:56

I know a Woody, mid-teens. He’s a bit of a bully - partly as a result of the teasing he gets about his name.

Itchytights · 21/08/2018 21:57

Zoe Ball has a Woody.
I think it’s cute.

There are far worse names out there.

JaretsGirlfren · 21/08/2018 22:04

I know a Woody. He’s gorgeous, sweet, loving he’s a dog

cablewable · 21/08/2018 22:06

Yes, he's adorable and the name suits him.

cablewable · 21/08/2018 22:07

I think some of these comments and incredibly rude

GimbleInTheWabe · 21/08/2018 22:08

I like Woodrow as a name with nn as Woody. Wouldn't cross my mind as rude or otherwise, I think it's a pretty cool name!

percheron67 · 21/08/2018 22:09

Not a name I would choose. Reminiscent of Woody Woodpecker.
