Are they ok with their name? Do they get picked on?

Do you think it's a name that should be avoided?

Struggling with names, but we love this one. Worried about what future friends might say to him.

I was watching Blues Brothers the other day and thought what a great name Elwood was with Woody as a nickname.

NerdyBird · 21/08/2018 22:12

I know of a Woody but he's a baby. I would think they'd get teased at school. I don't think it's a great name to give, if it comes about as a nickname then fair enough, but not as a deliberate nickname.

Just ran it past a teenager. He sniggered.

I know a couple of men who have woody as a nickname, they are both carpenters in their 60s and 70s and even then it is mainly people they worked with who use the nickname. It is not a name I would give anyone for anything other than a nickname

banannabreadforme · 21/08/2018 22:32

I know an Elwood (blues brother) who sometimes gets called woody

vivalafrida · 21/08/2018 22:34

I liked Zoe Ball's choice until I read that it's a pun on 'Would he fuck'. Put me right off.

9amTrain · 21/08/2018 22:38

It's either going to make people think of Toy Story or an erection.

I don't know why anyone would choose this name 😅

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 21/08/2018 22:40

I am godmother to a Woody. Edward on birth cert but known as Woody from day one. Lovely boy so I have positive associations to the name.

Woodythewoodcutter · 21/08/2018 22:47

Name changed for this as it’s very outing.
We are expecting a girl. We are going to name her Woodea which means ‘women of the Forrest’. Her dad is a tree surgeon. We have already started using Woody as nn. We appreciate its not everyone’s cup of tea but we don’t care we love it. We Also considered Woody for a boy. (We wanted a girl, although would have been pleased with a boy also, so it’s not the case we are disappointed it’s not a boy).

I am not worried about teasing at school. There are loads of children with out there names these days. We can’t all be Alfie and Ellie. Or Sarah and Mark like in my school days.

We ran it past a cross section of boys aged 15-21, private and state educated, rural and city unbringings, and none of them ever used Wood or Woody as slang for a hard on. It’s a generational (or maybe regional thing). But no one We spoke to under the age of 35 had heard of it as slang for an stiffy and no one under the age of 55 had ever used it. It’s all about the Stiffys, boners and hard ons these days 😁

I know an adult woodie and he likes his name.

LtGreggs · 21/08/2018 22:55

I was making small talk with a new recruit at work who was called Woody (he introduced himself as that, and it was on his name badge etc) . It came up that this was actually his nickname, not given name. I asked why - it was because he had a false leg. He had to repeat himself several times before I actually believed him. That was awkward...

shallichangemyname · 21/08/2018 23:00

I do. Although his formal name is Edward he's been called Woody since birth. It was an abbreviation his parents decided on when they chose the name.

freddiethegreat · 21/08/2018 23:13

I know a Woody. Must be 12 now, nice kid, charming, quite fun, possibly a little bit hipster. Never been picked on to my knowledge, but then I am not on the playground with him! I have never thought of it with either of the meanings on here, in fact I have never heard ‘woody’ used for an erection. I am in the 35 - 45 age bracket.

Heatherjayne1972 · 22/08/2018 00:03

My cat is called woody!

MerryMarigold · 22/08/2018 00:06

My friends has a cat called Woody. I don't like Woody Allen so that puts me off the name, although the cat is very fluffy and cute.

MerryMarigold · 22/08/2018 00:06

Heather xpost!!

greenlanes · 22/08/2018 00:15

My DC have a child in their class called woody. He seems ok with it (secondary school). I wouldn't be. Strange name to choose for all the implications given sbove.

sayinggoodbye · 22/08/2018 00:15

I knew a woody, who had his name changed by deedpoll because he detested it so so much. He was bullied when young, then grew to the kind of man who it didn't suit, and held so much resentment because he didn't have a "real" name. I also know an old woody who doesn't seem to have any issue. I'd run with Edward and no woody so that he has the option.

sayinggoodbye · 22/08/2018 00:17

Nn- autocorrect changed to no

Effic · 22/08/2018 00:23

One school age child. He was quite a cool character and made friends easily. He was able to ignore the loss taking that started in about year 4 (more toy story than sexual) and bat it back mostly. Had occasional tears and a few time we (the school) had to intervene but mostly ok. No idea what happened when he moved to senior school but why on earth would you?

Effic · 22/08/2018 00:25

Loss = piss

Threeandabit · 22/08/2018 19:48

I have not come across this name in real life.

PotteringAlong · 22/08/2018 19:51

Only one, he’s my favourite deputy...

I don’t know anyone in real life called woody.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 22/08/2018 19:58

I keep thinking of chortling woodpeckers and 1970s tartan-clad guitarists. Don’t do it, OP!

MozzieMagnet · 22/08/2018 20:04

Glitterball Zoe's son. He'll be 18 now. Woody Cook sounds awful though. (Answer: no, he wouldn't)
Woody Harrelson from Cheers and AMA About Rampart fame is pretty cool though.

Woody is like Buzz...cool name but you probably need another one on the birth certificate
