Finger sucking - 9 year old

DD9 has sucked her fingers as a comfort since she was a baby, and now has a significant open bite. If she stops now, she’s less likely to need orthodontic treatment, but that’s easier said than done!

We’ve tried tape, gloves, rewards and bribery but nothing has worked so far.

Has anyone got any suggestions on how we/she can break the habit?

Off to buy that foul tasting stuff for nail biters tomorrow, but not convinced that will be enough to put her off!

Nope, dc12 and iscsat doing it now... Plasters on fingers, gloves, nail stuff, ustard, nam pla / fish sauce....nothing.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/08/2018 20:21

Yeh that nail biting stuff did nothing for me- I sucked through it and sucked my finger until well into my teens- had braces but didn’t fully sort the damage.
Not sure what would have made me stop except being more conscious of the affect it’s was having on my teeth and (as shallow as it sounds) my appearance.

Stop and grow worked for ds2 & dd. They were 10 & 8. The dentist told dd that sucking her thumb and finger together was changing the shape of her face which her brothers found hilarious. This was her incentive to stop. Did ds2 at same time as he felt he had to stop if dd was stopping.

She’s gone to bed with a sock on her hand bless her, after I showed her pictures of people’s mouths from google!

The dentist today told her, in a very nice way, that as she was nine she was a bit too old to be doing that now, and she so desperately wants to stop.

I’ve searched finger guards on Amazon - would they help do you think?

Can you send a link to it?
Chilli on the finger may have stopped me...but cruel maybe

Curlygirly · 20/08/2018 21:01

Mine just took the guards off as they were only velcroed on.

Chilli on fingers worked for my sis too...she wanted to stop though so she volunteered to do it the hard way as plasters weren't working.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/08/2018 21:22

If she kept that on she’d keep on cheaper plasters surely.
Can she distract herself when she usually sucks? Is it just to sleep or during the day?

DC’s orthodontist recommends long football type socks on each arm before bed. Long as they fit under a PJ top and both arms to stop them removing them.
