How much have you spent on uniforms ?

I can believe how much more expensive it gets when they're in high school !
Today I purchased ( for 2 dc)
2 blazers
2 jumpers
2 PE tops
2 PE hoodies
The total was £1501

Also trousers, blouses , joggers, socks from TU including 25 off - £50

Two pairs of shoes ( black nike ) £90
That's £300 and I haven't even bought any stationary yet and the younger ones needs a new rucksack .
I miss primary school days .
Two Clark's shoes @ £30 each and everything else from Tesco , no blazers or ties and it was all generic :(

We had to buy the schools official, logo bearing PE shirt , PE hoodie , jumper and blazer. The rest from Sainsbury's apart from the Nike shoes . The girls wear their Nike shoes all year round and not just to school and they are sturdy so get really good wear.
I replace shirts, trousers . Dd1 didn't wear her jumper much so we are keeping it . Her blazer she had in year 7 and 8 and it looks scruffy after 2 years so was replaced and her PE top of 2 years had shrunk after so much washing . The logo'd hoodies were newly introduced by the school and mandatory . They have three blouses and 2 trousers each .

So you spent £1501?! On two kids ?

I don't want to press the point but that's what your op says

badteacher · 20/08/2018 21:21

Cherry it was a typo which I corrected on the following post ( I was battling a toddler to sleep !) 150 on the school logo stuff.

About £30. DD starting mid primary after home education. Have only got the basics just in case...
1 cardi
3 shirts
1 skirt
Tights
Socks
PE top
Ties.

Shoes from a friend. Still need to get some tracky bottoms or similar, plimsolls and some trousers. So probably £50 total?

thesockgap · 20/08/2018 21:29

DS3 is about to start secondary school, so needed pretty much everything new.
DS2 is going into y10, and although it's great that his blazer and PE kits have lasted 3 years, the timing of needing new ones could be better!
So buying everything new for one child, and replacing blazer, shoes, football boots, trainers, and 2 kits for the other - I think we have spent about £500. And that's not including stuff still to get, like bags and stationery!!

CherryChatsworth · 20/08/2018 21:32

Oh phew!! I was astounded at £1500 Grin

Outnumb3red · 20/08/2018 21:44

2 in primary school

3 shirts (also has shirts from last year that are still good)
2 jumpers
New trainers
Jacket
Wears shorts to school - no need to buy new ones for this year

4 shirts
2 pinafores
2 skirts
2 shorts
Tights & socks
Shoes

About £240. Everything from M&S except the shoes/trainers and jacket

neversleepagain · 20/08/2018 21:51

My dc (twins) are going into year 1. A lot still fits them from Reception and in good condition (bought from M&S).

I bought...
7 polos £15
6 pairs of tights £12
School shoes £90
New book bags £7
4 cardigans £14
Labels £12
Water bottles £9

£160 for 2 dc.

BackInTime · 21/08/2018 08:47

Another fan of stikins labels, so easy and they have never come off clothes or lunch boxes etc.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 21/08/2018 09:34

Thanks to all who have advised on the labels thing! Will buy some stickins Smile

If the state requires DC to wear uniform, the state should supply it and meet its costs.

suzy2b · 21/08/2018 11:43

1 skirt asda £5 shirts asda £5.50 jumper from last year shoes where bought last term socks £3.50 lidl that's it

NothingOnTellyAgain · 21/08/2018 11:47

Our PE kit cost £100 for 3 items no spares.

Local comp.

I'm flabbergasted.

Primary was fine - they had some logo jumpers etc but alternative was a plain one in the right colour. Only thing you had to have was a tie (£3).

This secondary school lark is completely bananas.

5000KallaxHoles · 21/08/2018 12:05

Primary (and I'm lucky because they can wear supermarket jumpers and the like) -

4 x cardigans each (I'll put two away for halfway through the year when they get knackered with whiteboard pen and swap them over then) - think they were £6 for 2 but they've vanished off the Asda website now
5 x polo shirts each - £7 a pack
2 x pinafores - about £5 each
2 x pairs of jersey trousers each again under a fiver
I did buy them both the school logo coat this year at £18 each - but completely optional and I've just done it as they're decent quality and I don't give a shit if it's wrecked in Forest School

Have loads of grey socks I bought recently in last year they're still using, replaced a few pairs of tights but my mum paid for them and she's buying them school shoes while they're staying with her. There's a gradual school sock war of attrition in this house so I tend to just restock them when we hit a point of being low on supplies rather than buy new in September.

PE and I just replaced their shorts as they'd managed to put holes in the arse of their old ones. I bought the gingham dresses when Lidl had them in to put away for when the nicer weather rolls back around as well.

DD2 has pencil case stuff because she struggles to grip normal pencils and rather than having to butt heads with school to get them to provide things for her - it's easier to just put a set of what she's likely to need together than have to be reminding staff and SENCOs (also provided her writing slope for the same reason).

NerdyBird · 21/08/2018 12:27

I just totted this up this morning as I've got most of the stuff now; Dd starting Reception.

Total: £125
£42 is school logo stuff - cardi, pe tshirt, tie, book bag and pe bag

£36 on shoes
£47 on generic items - 5x shirts, 3x skirts, a billion socks
Still have to buy pe shorts, jogging bottoms and at least one pair of trainers.

DH has had to buy 5x shirts, 2x skirts and a jumper for DSD2 who is going into year 6 but grew lots and now nothing fits. We can hopefully use the skirts for DD later, but they go to different schools so the shirts and jumper won't be used again. She needs new shoes and a rucksack, possibly a coat too.
DSD1 needs new shoes and a rucksack but probably nothing else apart from socks/tights. She had a load of new stuff last year (y8) as school changed half the uniform and of course she'd had all new stuff for y7 as changing schools.
So I think we've at least another £150 to go!

Givemeallyourcucumber · 21/08/2018 12:31

2x DC at primary.

6x school logo jumpers £70
12x shirts £12
4x DS trousers £16
2x shorts £8
4x skirts £16
4x summer dresses £18
20x socks £8
5x tights £6
10x pants £5
10x knickers £5
2x school shoes £90
2x p.e trainers £15
2x p.e shirts £4
4x p.e shorts £4
1x p.e bag £3
2x coats £60

Total= to fucking much!

MaryDollNesbitt · 21/08/2018 12:34

Kitting 11yo DD out for P7:

5 x logo polo tops - £37.50
2 x cardigans - £28.00
2 x skirts - £16.00
Clarks Shoes - £38.00
New trainers - £25 (sale)
PE bits (plain t-shirts and leggings) £10.00
5 x black tights - £8
5 x white socks - £3.50
2 x plimsoles - £10 (current size and next size)
Headbands - £3.50
Small toiletry bag for sanitary products - £4.50 (started her period over the summer)

£184.00.

We didn’t bother replacing her school bag, pencil case, stationary or raincoat. She’ll be needing a winter coat in no time and I’m guessing she’ll want to change the rest for high school next August, so we’ve recycled those bits this year. Winter coat and boots will easily be another £60-80 in a couple of months.

It’s fucking shocking seeing it all written down like that Shock I don’t know how parents with more than one manage it. I dread to think what next year will cost me with her starting at the high school. I’ll have her blazer, tie and a specific school PE kit to budget for on top of everything else. This year was more expensive as she’s hit that age where she wants to pick her own things, and she’s becoming a bit fussier. The only cardigan she liked was £14 out of M&S – times two. I can see the days of whipping around our local Asda for cheap uniform fading fast!

TrashPanda · 21/08/2018 12:40

DS going into Y5 and has one logo jumper that still fits and a book bag. He's got a pair of shorts and a pair of trainers for PE already and plenty of underwear. I've bought
2 logo jumpers @ £9 each
2 trousers @ £9.50
6 white polo tops @ £3.50 for 2
1 pair of shoes @£19
all from Tesco and £5 off a £25 spend.
2 pairs of shorts from Sainsbury's @ £6.75
1 PE tshirt from Amazon at £2.08

Next year I will need to replace the polo tops and probably new shoes but the rest should last.

I will have DS2 starting reception though with nothing to hand down as they changed the logo last year.

Givemeallyourcucumber · 21/08/2018 12:40

I dread the day I have to buy all 3 of them uniform. I have packed DDs uniform away from last year to save for DD2!

SparkyBlue · 21/08/2018 13:13

Not too bad this year only about €60.00 on actual uniform stuff which was a crested polo shirt, two shirts, three pinafores and tights and socks. Her cardigan and tracksuit from last year are absolutely fine and she will get this year out of them. Then another €70.00 on books and stationery and we need to give €50.00 for arts and crafts when we go back in September so it all adds up really

Blue92x · 22/08/2018 14:32

DD starting whole new school this year. Think they wanted logo everything but I’ve only bought her logo cardigans 4 @ £11 each and went to Asda for her pe kit (4polos & 2 pairs shorts) 5 white polos, 2 skirts, 2 pinifores, plimsoles came to £52 so far only spent £96 but need to buy her a new coat and shoes from Clark’s before she starts back in September.

stegosauruslady · 22/08/2018 16:38

DD1 starting secondary has cost me 170. I really did feel ripped off by the logo stuff, which cost me 89 for the blazer and cardigan. I could have spent less on skirts etc but wanted decent ones as she grows super slowly!

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 22/08/2018 16:45

I haven't sorted it yet but dd only needs a cardigan as the others still fit, I'm planning to get a few more weeks out of the gingham dresses.

Does everyone buy new for each year? Surely some things still fit, they can't grow that much in 6 weeks.

Gilly12345 · 22/08/2018 18:31

This is the story of old, we have all been there, save your child allowance for this expense, that is what it is for.

Pibplob · 22/08/2018 19:06

Trouble is Gilly that some people need that child allowance to pay for food for their child, or to help keep a roof over their heads which has to come before school uniform. Not always possible to save it.
