TKTS Booth Leicester Square - any advice?

We live in south west London, and as the inlaws are visiting this weekend, we have the opportunity for an evening out!

DH wants us to go to the theatre, which sounds like an excellent plan. Except he doesn’t want to book in advance. He wants us to go to the TKTS booth in Leicester Square at around 6pm and pick a show from whatever tickets they have available.

I don’t mind this in principle, but I am worried that if we leave it that late, everything for that day will have sold out, so we’ll have trekked into town for no reason.

Has anyone got any experience of buying from TKTS and can tell me if it is reasonable to leave it that late? Or will we be disappointed.

You can go on line (tkts) to see what is available; they advertise them that
Morning. Not used for years but I never knew it to sell out of anything when I did use it. If they do you could always go to one of the cinemas

Remember it's Kidsweek so theatres are rammed full of people who may be unused to theatres and also loads of children.

Thanks, everyone - this is very useful. DH and I had a chat about it, and I don't think he had realised TKTS don't have discount tickets for every single show, which put him off the idea. I'm sure we'll do it at some point, just not this weekend.

So, we've reverted to plan B, which was 'see what we can pick up reasonably cheap online', and we're off to see Pissed Up Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet.
