Have been awake since 4:30 worrying about my ability to direct in France.

We have a sat-nav phones google maps normal maps and aa route planner.

DH wants me to use a route planner as that got us (me MIL FIL and him ) to hotel near Portsmouth. I on the other hand am more worried that this is first time for DH driving in France and I would rather at least at first use phone and help him with roads etc.

I don’t want an argument about it though m.

I'm currently in France. We use Google for directions and it's very good. Have a vague idea which towns your aiming for and you'll have no problem. The French roads are very well signposted and easy to understand.

Thanks!

I live in France and use Google all the time, I don't think I've ever had a problem getting somewhere. You will be fine.

I’m just back. We used google maps and the directions on it were good. The sign posts over there are easy to read. Don’t worry u will do great

I've directed us around France using a years out of date paper road map from top to bottom. It's very easy and very well signposted. Motorways are normally paid for but there is often an N route (like our A roads) that runs alongside.
As PP have said just go in the direction of the nearest town/city/village and you'll get there. On a motorway you may have to look at the map to know that if eg you are going to Le Havre from Calais the Motorway will say dir. Nantes as that's the end of the route so to speak.

Key phrases

  • Centre-ville- town centre. B useful sign. Follow it. Gets you right into town
  • Toutes directions- all directions. A godsend if you are lost!
-Peage - motorway pay station -Autoroute- motorway -Aire- like our motorway service stations. Some are just a stop off place for a picnic (outside tables, Tap and loo), some have a cafe. Recommend buying a baguette, salami, tomatoes, cheese and crisps and making your own sandwich.

In 15 years of navigating France We've only pooped on the phone when there's been a badly signposted diversion or when we needed to get right to a particular town centre spot.
