The Sixth Sense film (contains no spoilers in OP)

Recently watched The Sixth Sense for the 1st time in many years (probably seen it 5 or 6 times in total). It's still brilliant but there is no feeling like the one when it all unfolds at the end the 1st time you watch it. I wish I could erase it and watch it for the 1st time every time.

Primal Fear is another one I feel like that about.

Got me thinking and I just wondered if anyone else has films they feel like this about, I love a twist so would like to watch a few new films to get this feeling again . . .

Broken. An Australian film, had me in a state of anxiety all the way through.

Shuttle. You think it's a B movie all the way through but it stayed with me.

The killing ground. Another Australian film and again a high state of anxiety through it.

How it ends. Wouldn't say it was a twist but I didn't guess.

The problem with 6th Sense was the hype. Once you know “it’s a ghost story and there’s a huge twist” then if you know your ghost stories you’ve got a very good idea of what that twist is going to be. And the trailer filled in the question of which character the twist applied to (no idea why it did that - it was a stupid choice). And the reveal seems to drag on for hours. Every time you think he’s finally grasped it it turns out that they’re still dragging it out a bit longer.

My favourite is still The Usual Suspects which is beautifully executed.

Currently (re)watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer with teenaged DD. She’s loving it and she’s completely unspoiled, so I’m really enjoying watching her for the big plot reveals. Her face when Dawn turned up was a picture.

Whatter · 18/08/2018 23:17

'Tully' is brilliant. Jesus didn't see that ending coming! Shock

Also love 50 First Dates Blush Just love the ending with Drew Barrymore when she.....y'know. Grin

Clawdy · 18/08/2018 23:19

The original Planet of the Apes. Long before the era of spoilers in reviews, so it was such a shock, that final shot.

MemorialBeach · 18/08/2018 23:19

I guessed the twist of The Sixth Sense about 10 minutes before I saw it for the first time. I spent the whole film hoping I was wrong so I could experience 'gasping in shock' with my friends at the reveal and was so disappointed to find I was right.

Knowing there was a twist really spoilt it for me, as I kept trying to work out what it could be and obviously put so much thought into it that I eventually correctly guessed.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 18/08/2018 23:38

The Crying Game is pretty twisty. More shocking at the time than it would be now though.

xFreePeaceSweetx · 19/08/2018 01:25

Just remembered Identity. That's twisty. I saw it at the cinema years ago and I don't remember who's in it except John Cusack. You can watch it on sky or Netflix at the moment.
American History X doesn't have a twist as such but it left me feeling speechless for like 5 minutes

leccybill · 19/08/2018 01:32

Oh yes, Identity was a good film.

gluteustothemaximus · 19/08/2018 01:34

I loved The Sixth Sense. Never watched the trailer and never knew about the twist, so it was a big gasp moment.

I love a good gasp moment so always avoid anything about the film beforehand.

I do agree OP. I wish I could erase it to watch it again afresh.

73kittycat73 · 19/08/2018 01:48

I never had that with The Sixth Sense. Ian Lee gave the ending away (On The 10 O clock show?) so I knew what happened before I watched it. Never have forgiven him. Angry

gumdropbuttons · 19/08/2018 02:09

The machinist was a good twist but such a depressing film

Loved The Others, underrated horror film imo. Nothing gory but still really scary in a properly chilling way!

SleepingStandingUp · 19/08/2018 02:12

ooh the Secret Window is good, and it was in JD's hot days

AllAboutTheStuff · 19/08/2018 02:16

Yep shutter island, sixth sense and 7 I found totally predictable . Didn’t take away from the fact that they were fantastic films though

AllAboutTheStuff · 19/08/2018 02:17

And the others

AllAboutTheStuff · 19/08/2018 02:20

50 first dates is one of my favourite films. Absolutely love it.

AllAboutTheStuff · 19/08/2018 02:31

And the film identity , I guessed really early on what was going off there but still enjoyed the film

Graphista · 19/08/2018 03:07

Love films with a twist.

But the others was shit, sorry, neither scary nor surprising.

Usual suspects was genius! Shame about kevin spacey's awful behaviour making it hard for me to watch anything with him in now.

Memento I enjoyed, on that note LA Confidential too (argh Kevin why?!)

Arlington road is FABULOUS.

Now you see me more fluffy/light but still a good twist.

12 monkeys great.

No way out - love that too, but yea loses something once you know the twist.

Primal fear I enjoyed but twigged a few scenes before we were supposed to

Yes to planet of the apes - in the days before reviews were widely available so I was totally fresh to it.

Identity is a fabulous film - so good that even when you know the twist you can watch repeatedly and see new things in it.

Often forgotten now but I remember how huge it was at the time - empire strikes back

Devils advocate - another favourite film and an early display of charlize theron's acting chops.

Scream - people forget that was a twist ending

The Game - LOVE this film

For those who liked primal fear you may enjoy final analysis too.

Source code - a family favourite here

Focus - is an interesting one too.

The loft - a surprise discovery on Netflix.

Presumed innocent has a nice wee twist too

But there's tv shows too

24, spooks had a few twists/shocks notably in the first series, the good wife, eastenders had a few cracking reveals back in the day, the good place - saw it coming but still fun, ER - few shocks in there! Scandal...

If any of you are readers there's an anthology by Jeffrey archer called "a twist in the tale" which is kinda fun, puts me in mind of tales of the unexpected, also before I go to sleep, behind the scenes at the museum too, plus of course any number of books by the best crime authors - Agatha Christie, Ruth rendell etc they're classics but fun for new readers.

MissDai5y · 19/08/2018 03:33

Someone mentioned Unbreakable, if you have watched this or do watch this also watch Split.

I remember being massively disappointed that no more films followed it but now I am super excited.

Identity with John Cusack. I loved it and so did my OH. You'd be hard pressed to figure everything that's going on until it's cleared up for you and it's definitely worth it.

ZanyMobster · 19/08/2018 09:16

Yes with Primal Fear I think I partly guessed about 'the twist' earlier but then something then made me think I was wrong so it was still a gasp moment.

I think it's a shame there are very few gasp moments in tv anymore, when I was at school I woukd watch all the soaps and you never knew anything but now you can pretty much read the full plot beforehand. It ruins it for me.

Worked out Sixth Sense more or less at the beginning - thought that was the whole premise of the film. Kept thinking right until the end - what/when is this twist that people are talking about.

Romcomjunkie · 19/08/2018 09:51

Yes! I fell foul of Iain Lee spoiling it, too! It really did spoil it for me.

w4ytoomuch · 19/08/2018 11:50

I did the audible gasp when reading Gone Girl Grin. Wish I could've erased my memory to be able to gasp again while watching the film!

HollowTalk · 19/08/2018 11:55

Fingersmith has the biggest twist
