Tinned carrots. Who eats these?

Sorry, inspired by another thread, but really not a TAAT!

I know supermarkets sell tinned carrots (and potatoes etc) but who buys and eats them?

I always assumed (when a young child) that older people, who'd gone through the war would like the peace of mind of having a good stock of non-perishable food. Indeed, there were a great number of power cuts when I was small, so everyone had something in, so you could eat if you came home and the power was off.

But that was forty years ago, and there are dwindling numbers of people left from those generations, sadly.

So who (under the age of seventy, say) buys tinned veg, but particularly tinned carrots?

Do you actually prefer the taste to fresh ones?

I like tinned tomatoes esp for currys spag bol chilli etc, I don't get it often but tinned corn is very nice ( I scoff it stone cold straight out of the tin ) baked and kidney beans and the odd tin of chickpeas . Usualy have a few tins of soup too.
But as for carrots, peas ,green beans, spuds , mushrooms you can keep them I do not like them at all .
Each to there own .

There are some excellent recipe ideas on here Smile Am going to try the fishcakes.

2 of my kids love "oranges in a tin" (tinned mandarin oranges) but they're actually quite expensive... Where we live anyway. I buy them sometimes as a treat Shock Otherwise we buy tinned tomatoes, baked beans, tinned tuna and sweet corn for jacket potato toppings, and gurkins but they come in glass jars.

I buy tinned carrots, sweetcorn - carrots are lovely in a strew better than fresh or frozen IMP

I buy the value tinned sweet corn, peas, potatoes and carrots. I use them in soups and to chuck with casseroles etc

blueskiesandforests · 18/08/2018 17:27

Seems fairly obvious that tinned veg is mostly bought by people without much in the way of cooking facilities as you just warm it up, don't have to cook it, or by people without freezers, or by people with small appetite living alone who eat tiny amounts, probably mainly elderly.

Becca19962014 · 18/08/2018 17:33

To the pp saying they can't understand how people with hand problems can manage a tin opener - we purchase special tin openers which are battery operated where we literally press a large button and the tin is opened.

rainbowstardrops · 18/08/2018 17:49

Does it @blueskiesandforests?!!!
From what I've read it's a mixture of finance/taste and convenience!
I can afford fresh veg but I bloody love tinned potatoes!

It's definitely an 'each to their own'

SilverySurfer · 18/08/2018 17:56

Couldn't agree more HoppingPavlova Of course there are exceptions, ie if you have physical difficulty peeling, slicing etc but I would find something else to eat than tinned carrot mush.

ImNotAsGreenasImCabbageLooking not sure who appointed you thread prefect. We are allowed to have a different opinion you know.

I'm elderly, live alone, have a relatively small appetite and wouldn't eat a tin of veg if you paid me.

RabbitsAreTasty · 18/08/2018 17:59

Very little mention of tinned tomatoes and tinned beans.

We use loads of tinned tomatoes. Every UK supermarket I've ever been in stocks way more tinned tomatoes than tinned carrots or potatoes. Loads of tins of beans too.

Do you lot really not use tinned tomatoes? Who is buying them all then? It can't just be me.

What about the people who say they never use tinned veg? Do you prep your tomatoes and beans from fresh too?

Reiltin · 18/08/2018 18:00

I buy them and other tinned veg for food drives / food bank. Better than just baked beans!

bigsighall · 18/08/2018 18:01

Tinned spuds, squashed with butter and put in a sandwich. FOOD OF THE GODS Grin

Rodofiron · 18/08/2018 18:08

Tinned carrots are fantastic with Fray Bentos pies. Or maybe a nice tin of stewing steak. Chuck in a bit of smash with a big knob of melted marge and you have a meal fit for a king.

Jozxyqk · 18/08/2018 18:08

Ha - I don't even think of tinned tomatoes as "tinned veg" in the same way as other vegetables. We use loads of them. And likewise, baked beans.

We recently got the Good Grips tin opener - it's the best hand operated one I've ever used. I have weakness in one hand but it's a doddle to use.
We've had a couple of electric openers - one was great, the recent one was terrible & has completely stopped working less than 6 months after purchase, so we're taking it back tomorrow.

keyboardkate · 18/08/2018 18:46

Tinned carrots are ace in a stew, chopped up for Shepherd's Pie etc.

Too much faff scraping and peeling the fresh ones, and they take ages to cook too.

Anyway the thing is, with a lot of stuff like this, potatoes, sweetcorn, carrots and so on is to empty the tin into a colander and rinse away the juice, then leave to drain for a couple of minutes..

Every product has a place in our lives.

Apart from baked beans and plum/chopped tomatoes, I have never bought tinned vegetables. I always like the look of the Daucy ones in jars and anything else in a glass jar, like jalapenos and stuffed red peppers.

thisonebreath · 18/08/2018 19:11

I much prefer tinned green beans over fresh/frozen. Also have tinned beans of various types, tomatoes, sweet corn, tuna and fruit. I'm going to try tinned potatoes in fritatta, I've only ever had them when we're camping.

supercalifragilistic2 · 18/08/2018 19:14

Dp loves tinned veg! His particular favourite are carrots and peas that come in a glass jar from Tesco .

I buy tinned sweetcorn and tinned veg, aside from that I don't bother. I do tend to chuck some tins of veg in the food bank. I figure that some people won't be able to afford to run a freezer and by providing tinned veg, at least they get something that resembles veg.

dingdongdigeridoo · 18/08/2018 20:00

I’d only eat tinned peas and carrots as a kid. I think they were the only veg I ate for many years. Don’t buy them nowadays, but I do like tinned green beans. I also buy tinned new potatoes to make easy and cheap frittatas.

CherryPavlova · 18/08/2018 20:13

Most tinned vegetables are stomach turning.
Tomatoes are fine. Sweetcorn for soup or fishcakes at a push. Otherwise just no.

ChateauRouge · 18/08/2018 20:48

OMG. I've never had such a popular thread!

We only use jars of passata, no tinned tomatoes here!

I always use tinned sweetcorn, tomatoes and baked beans. Sometimes chickpeas, butter beans ect
When I was little My grandma used to always give me a dinner of ham, mashed potatoes and tinned garden peas. I love tinned peas! However, have never tried tinned carrots or potatoes but I am going to try them!
I think food snobbery is just awful.

Skyejuly · 18/08/2018 22:05

I love that glass jar of carrots and peas lol mmm

I just buy value everything so even the tomatoes and beans. I do cook vegetables too but I find them good to keep in.

Upsy1981 · 18/08/2018 22:16

Tinned tomatoes, tinned sweetcorn, tinned peas (not so fussed on the texture of frozen peas). That's all. I used to love those tinned potatoes in my younger days but not bought them for years.

kettleonplease · 18/08/2018 22:31

Mmmm I love tinned carrots and tinned green beans...even better cold
