Tinned carrots. Who eats these?

Sorry, inspired by another thread, but really not a TAAT!

I know supermarkets sell tinned carrots (and potatoes etc) but who buys and eats them?

I always assumed (when a young child) that older people, who'd gone through the war would like the peace of mind of having a good stock of non-perishable food. Indeed, there were a great number of power cuts when I was small, so everyone had something in, so you could eat if you came home and the power was off.

But that was forty years ago, and there are dwindling numbers of people left from those generations, sadly.

So who (under the age of seventy, say) buys tinned veg, but particularly tinned carrots?

Do you actually prefer the taste to fresh ones?

Another one who uses tinned potatoes in curry, they are just the right size and seem not to disintegrate as much as fresh, a real time and mess saver.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 18/08/2018 12:42

Tinned baby carrots are ace! So are tinned spuds and peas.

weloveheyduggee · 18/08/2018 12:43

They're good for foodbank parcels as we can only give out non-perishable food, and like to give plenty of healthy things in there. (Would never eat them myself- a buy a big bag for 40p from Lidl)

We don't buy any tinned veg at all, btw, other than occasionally baked beans. And kidney beans, chick peas, haricots etc in tetrapaks.

Weloveduggee- I always put toiletries into the foodbank, not food, tbh, as I read (on MN) that often there's not nearly enough toiletries, and tbh things like decent toothpaste, handwash, sanitary towels etc are expensive.

ChateauRouge No tinned tomatoes?

ShatnersBassoon · 18/08/2018 12:48

There's nothing wrong with tinned vegetables. They're a convenient and cost-effective way of balancing a diet, particularly for those who are cooking for one, need to limit the amount of fuel they use to cook, don't have a huge amount of storage space or the ability to plan ahead.

I haven't eaten tinned carrots for years, but I used to like them when I was a kid. They were very soft and sweet I think.

ShatnersBassoon · 18/08/2018 12:50

And yes, who doesn't use tinned tomatoes? They're obviously a cut above the other tinned vegetables Grin

PanicAtTheCostco · 18/08/2018 12:50

Me!

Tinned carrots, sweetcorn and greenbeans.

Just easier than fresh.

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 18/08/2018 12:51

Tinned sweet corn only. The frozen stuff if shit.

We got given 2 tins of potatoes at a show a few years ago. Now, I used to love tinned potatoes when I was a poor person in my first flat and I was adamant I would eat these despite my DH and kids disgust - "there's nothing wrong with them!" I kept telling them.

These tins sat in our garage for about 5 years before I gave in and admitted that I couldn't bring myself to eat them. Smile

Tinned sweetcorn - perfectly fine. Actually quite good to use in tuna & sweetcorn sandwiches or baked potatoes.
Tinned potatoes - reasonable & quick standby, slice thinly & use in a Spanish omelette. Or take camping. I'd not thought of curry - Bombay potatoes could be much easier with this.
Tinned carrots. Nooo! I'd sooner use frozen... but raw carrots are so cheap anyway, why have them taking up space in the cupboard or freezer?
Tinned beans (plain) yes, for convenience, but I mostly cook them from dried, especially since I got an InstantPot.

BasicSAHM · 18/08/2018 12:58

I always have tinned corn, carrots, and potatoes. I also buy fresh too. Those are all staple ingredients in our home and nice to have on hand for a recipe when I’m out of fresh or frozen. Honestly tinned potatoes are pretty tasty sliced up, bit of bacon, fry in butter, and then doused with vinegar and pepper.

violets17 · 18/08/2018 12:58

Tinned carrots - I chuck them in a spag bol and they are my favourite bit of it. My DCs hate it but I grew up in the 70s and love tinned mandarins with evaporated milk too.

NoelHeadbands · 18/08/2018 12:58

They will have to prise my tinned marrowfat peas out of my cold, dead hands.

katielouise3 · 18/08/2018 12:59

Carrots are vile. Tinned OR fresh. I would rather eat my own toenails.

category12 · 18/08/2018 13:00

Tinned veg is easy to throw into casseroles etc - people aren't so snobby about tinned tomatoes, and what's the difference really? Hmm I don't often use it, but it's good to have when you haven't been able to go shopping for fresh or when I'm short of time.

AviatorShades · 18/08/2018 13:01

Tinned carrots+coriander seeds+chicken stock = SOUP! [ smile]

HolyMountain · 18/08/2018 13:02

Tinned potatoes are excellent in a curry, especially for a speedy midweek winter tea.

NaomiNagata · 18/08/2018 13:02

I use them in soup. Handy coz I can keep lentils, tinned carrots and stock cubes for a good long time so if we get snowed in, we can make soup!

DoulaDaisy · 18/08/2018 13:03

Jars of carrots here, kids love the baby ones with dinner and they take two mins in the microwave at the end of cooking dinner.

Sweetcorn for salads, mixed through tuna etc.

Tin potatoes are great in curries/stews, I recently made curried chickpea stew and sent some in to my neighbour, she came in raving wanting to know how the potatoes were so nice as hers always fall apart, she was delighted to find out about tinned potatoes!

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 18/08/2018 13:04

I don’t use them as much as I used to but I used to chuck tinned carrots in all sorts of things- tagines, curries, pies... massive timesaver and very cheap

Feltcushion · 18/08/2018 13:08

People who don't have a cooker/hob and only have access to a microwave. This who cant use their cooker as their gas is cut off.

kateandme · 18/08/2018 13:09

tinned sweetcorn
tinned mushrooms.
tinned beans and pulses.
tinned soup
tinned tuna
an for nostalgic reasons tinned chicken in white sauce for firs tnight of camping with tinned sweetcorn stired through!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 18/08/2018 13:11

I buy them for pies, although not potatoes. Or mushrooms, they are gipping.

WilburIsSomePig · 18/08/2018 13:12

There's a definite whiff of snobbery about this thread. Lovely for you that you buy kidney beans, haricot and chickpeas in tetrapaks, however, some families live in real poverty. Not, 'I can only afford own brand chickpeas', I mean real poverty and tinned veg, like carrots, can be very cheap so I can see exactly why some families may buy them.
