Tinned carrots. Who eats these?

Sorry, inspired by another thread, but really not a TAAT!

I know supermarkets sell tinned carrots (and potatoes etc) but who buys and eats them?

I always assumed (when a young child) that older people, who'd gone through the war would like the peace of mind of having a good stock of non-perishable food. Indeed, there were a great number of power cuts when I was small, so everyone had something in, so you could eat if you came home and the power was off.

But that was forty years ago, and there are dwindling numbers of people left from those generations, sadly.

So who (under the age of seventy, say) buys tinned veg, but particularly tinned carrots?

Do you actually prefer the taste to fresh ones?

oh and tinned mandarins to go in between a split on half jamacain ginger cake with a little of the juice on each half soaked in with fresh cream.amazing!

ShumpaLumpa · 18/08/2018 13:14

Its about 30-60p per veg tin so yes cheaper

You can get a whole bag of carrots for 30p!

I buy various tinned veg to keep in when I'm not able to get out for food, which happens quite a bit. Same reason I occasionally will buy tinned pasta/beans as well.

I know the food bank rely heavily on them as well as they don't stock fresh veg or fruit.

I buy tinned fruit as well - peaches, raspberries (when out of season in juice (though some are in apple juice which effects the taste)) I'll also buy fruit salad and fruit pie fillings - found it easier for me.

For me tinned lasts longer, I don't have storage for bags of carrots but can manage a couple of tins - value do me and they're about 19p.

RB68 · 18/08/2018 13:17

They are useful to food banks as well as they can't always give fresh veg but these days they are as good as (and as others have said just need heating through which can easily be done with a microwave). I use tinned corn. Same for potatoes last alot longer than fresh and no need to keep cool/dry etc

I'm afraid I like tinned asparagus - throwback to the 70s when my mother made little canapes with brown bread, cream cheese and asparagus, all rolled up! They were delicious but probably would not taste so good now!

Also love tinned chicken in a white sauce - my go to with rice when I haven't been feeling well.

Yes if you can get to a supermarket., if you can store the big bag and if they don’t go bad before you use them.
Then yes you can get a big bag for 30p

The local shop sells tins cheap here
The local supermarket,Sainsbury’s sells then fresh for considerably more.
Of course they could get the £4 per person return bus to Aldi. Lazy poor bastards

According to the kids tinned potatoes make great fish cakes when mashed together with some pilchards in tomato sauce. They also work really well in a slow cooker stew as they don't seem to break up like fresh potatoes do.

I will have to try the bacon hash though- sounds like the kind of thing mine would love for a weekend breakfast.

crunchymint · 18/08/2018 13:21

My first boyfriend used to eat them. Tried to get him to eat fresh carrots, but he preferred tinned, and was lazy when it came to cooking.

crunchymint · 18/08/2018 13:22

Also everyone here likes tinned fruit, and it is a very healthy pudding.

PlatypusPie · 18/08/2018 13:23

We used to bring back the Bonduelle jars of petit pois and baby carrots in jars from holidays in France - my DH and one DD loved them, though I and other DD were a bit meh about them - quite sweet in an odd way, I thought. Tescos do their own version and you can get the Bonduelle ones in a can in some places. DH bought one of what he thought were the combo above but were diced full sized peas and carrots instead - had flashbacks to the awfulness of 1970s Russian salad ( peas, carrots, potatoes of strange mushiness in salad cream) as served by his DM with salads.

ShesABelter · 18/08/2018 13:26

I put tinnes carrots in mince when making mince and potatoes. Use tinned sweetcorn often for the kids as I don't like it. I like tinned green beans and ratatouillie.

trampolinemum · 18/08/2018 13:28

Tinned fruit also goes down a treat here, especially when I put it in jelly. They fight over those weird pink cherries in the cocktail ffs.

Laniakea · 18/08/2018 13:28

I avoid tetrapaks - they are terrible for recycling. Tins are much better.

InfiniteSheldon · 18/08/2018 13:29

Tinned potatoes make the best fish cakes are great in an emergency fritatta. But best quick tomato soup recipe is 2 tins of tom's a tin of baked beans veg stock cube a large pickled onion half a pint of water and a tin of carrots. Honestly I know it sounds vile but it's amazing and it's all from the stock cupboard

ProseccoPoppy · 18/08/2018 13:29

I buy and eat tinned sweet corn.

I buy tinned potatoes, carrots and peas for my local food bank as they ask for them. I asked the lady that runs it why and she said it was because a lot of the people they help can’t store frozen stuff (nor can the food bank, come to that) and that if you live in fuel poverty it is quicker and cheaper to warm through the tinned veg than cook from scratch, especially potatoes. The tinned veg are still nutritious and add a bit of variety to a food parcel. They also ask for long life protein items - so I sometimes buy tinned ham, corned beef or tuna.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/08/2018 13:30

I grew up with tinned veg. Usually fresh carrots for Sunday lunch but often tinned ones during the week.
I don't do it now. If I want a veg to be ready quickly, I just cook it in the microwave.

Hoozz · 18/08/2018 13:31

Tinned potatoes are good for thickening soup I learned that on MN!
Prefer tinned sweet corn to fresh but tinned carrots- no

1frenchfoodie · 18/08/2018 13:31

I thought just the same when I saw that thread. Tinned tomatoes and sweetcorn yes but I find the texture of tinned carrots is really blah. Plus they take less than 5 minutes to stream so it is not much of a time saving either. I live in France and tinned veg, green beans in particular, seem even more popular here than in the UK.

Lockheart · 18/08/2018 13:32

I have never bought them in my life, but am now seriously considering! They sound good for bulking out casseroles / pasta sauces / bolognese....

ToadOfSadness · 18/08/2018 13:33

I have tinned potatoes in the cupboard, but never thought to buy carrots, however do have some tinned peas. Also sweetcorn and assorted beans and pulses among the tomatoes, soup, fruit, evap. and condensed milk and various other things like meals in a can for days when I am not well and no-one will cook. And baked beans.

Must sort the cupboard out and see what is lurking at the back...

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/08/2018 13:34

It's the law to have tinned carrots with mince and dumplings

IDismyname · 18/08/2018 13:35

There was a thread on here not that long ago about tinned potatoes and what you could do with them.

There were plenty of ideas!

Clutterbugsmum · 18/08/2018 13:35

Like SheABelter I used tinned carrots and Potatoes in mince stew.

I also think that because the harvests this year are probably going to less due the lack of rain that tinned/frozen veg may be an Idea to stock up on.

notacooldad · 18/08/2018 13:35

I occasionally buy tinned potatoes as I like them with salt, lemon and coriander. Nice for a very quick lunch.
