Copper coil- how much pain will I be in

Wishicouldsleep · 17/08/2018 18:59

I'm getting the copper coil (not the hormonal Mirina) next week.

I have an important day with work 48 hours later. Am I likely to be in a lot of pain/discomfort?

I cannot miss this day at work. It's a huge thing for my career. Should I cancel my coil fitting?

Or am I worrying over nothing?Grin

Everyone is different but I was absolutely fine 2 hours after having mine fitted. A bit of spotting but no pain. Good luck!

PattiStanger · 17/08/2018 19:09

Obviously this has no bearing on how you will feel but I never had any discomfort and I had a coil fitted 3 times

I was same as namechanged above.

I was grand 48 hours later, I wouldn't worry. I've had both a copper coil and mirena fitted and in both cases was fine by 6 to 8 hours out. In the case of the mirena I did feel terrible that day but in retrospect, I think I was actually hungover (No tolerance for alcohol since I had kids...) Ibuprofen and paracetamol were all I needed, and only for 24 hours.

Jozxyqk · 17/08/2018 19:13

I was totally fine a couple of hours later.

CurbsideProphet · 17/08/2018 19:15

I went into cervical shock and felt awful (both times, my body expelled them both Blush ). I appreciate that I'm most likely the exception to the norm!

PrimeraVez · 17/08/2018 19:17

I had some quite heavy spotting for about 4-5 days after but the moment I was up off the bed, I was absolutely fine and felt like nothing had happened.

CryptoFascist · 17/08/2018 19:23

I've had two fitted, was a little sore for a day or so while it settled in, but was fine to go to work the day after.

Wishicouldsleep · 18/08/2018 06:36

Good to hear almost all of you didn't feel much pain after a few hours! Curbsideprophet how scary for you!

Wishicouldsleep I didn't want to be all doom and gloom about the coil, but I hadn't even heard of cervical shock before and I wished I had known it was a possibility! My body just didn't like the coils which is so unfortunate because in theory they're a great option.

I had one a couple of months ago. The actual insertion was unpleasant - kind of like a smear but worse - but not awful. I had period pain type cramping that evening. Uncomfortable but manageable with usual painkillers. I had a hot water bottle and went to bed early. By the next morning it had gone. I had the odd twinge of period type cramping for the next few days and on off spotting/light bloody discharge for the first few weeks. Been absolutely fine since then. Been great since then. So nice being off hormones

Kittykatmacbill · 18/08/2018 09:24

Uncomfortable the afternoon was fitted and first period was messy but 48 hours later was fine.

WhatsYourFuckingProblem · 18/08/2018 09:30

I had one fitted before I had kids, was ok going in but the cramps immediately after were awful. I was deathly pale and had to lay down for ten minutes before I went back to work.
Second one (still in now) was a bitch to insert but fine once in and I’ve had it 7yrs now.

Minniemountain · 18/08/2018 10:13

It was fine. Taking painkillers beforehand helped.

Aria2015 · 18/08/2018 10:19

I was fine afterwards. Had a slight cramp but nothing that would have stopped me getting on with my day.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 18/08/2018 10:33

It really depends on the individual. I was absolutely fine both times, it just felt similar to period pain (however at the time my period cramps were on the severe side), but my friend had to have hers taken out a month in because it completely messed her up.

I think the majority of people don’t find it that bad. Good luck!
