What do you do in the NHS and which other professionals do you work alongside who you have (job) envy for? I'm trying to decide which career I should choose and need inspiration!

Unqualified front line NHS worker here!
My advice would be choose a different career path. I am undermined and told my opinion doesn't matter everyday. I hate my job but can't afford to retrain. I am not the same person as when I started to work here. The management have no respect for us despite what they say we are just a number.

MoreProsecco · 18/08/2018 15:01

Dietitian here. Really enjoy my job, but sometimes wish I'd been a pharmacist or nurse, as they have more career opportunities.

AveAtqueVale · 18/08/2018 15:09

I’m a medical student, so envy anyone actually qualified and paid to do anything.

Though midwives especially.

Summerof2018 · 18/08/2018 15:18

I'm a theatre nurse and don't envy anyone else's role as I love mine so much.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 18/08/2018 15:27

I’m a HCSW with the district nurses and love it! I take bloods, do dressings, catheter care, balloon top ups, support visits and accompany the nurses to syringe drivers, Doppler etc. I have such a varied role within a small rural team and feel very valued and my opinion is also valued as a lot of the time I’m the first to see a patient so am very in tune and can pick up problems before they arise or if a patient is deteriorating, more so in my regulars!

My only envy is the nurses themselves and I will be doing my training through the open uni next year

TrixLestrange · 18/08/2018 15:33

PICU nurse and I envy the physics

TrixLestrange · 18/08/2018 15:34

Physios

ScribblyGum · 18/08/2018 15:42

I'm a community physio. I see everything under the sun, the only caveat being my patients should be housebound. Falls, frailty, orthopaedics, rheumatology, respiratory, cardiology, MSk, palliative care, neurology everything bar paeds and dermatology Grin. I'm a generalist and I absolutely love my job. I make a difference to my patients everyday and then I finish at 4.30. The only downside is the horrid trousers in a hot car.

I don’t envy anyone Smile

NoNoNoOohmaybe · 18/08/2018 15:51

OT, I love my job, hours are good, we have far more autonomy and quality time with patients than the nursing staff we work with.

If I could do anything else I think possibly physio as I'd like the chance to do extended practise in the future and easy private work to top up nhs wages.

RoseGardenDreams · 18/08/2018 16:37

Scribbly and other physios - how true is it that you have to strip down to your undies during your degree? Is someone winding me up?

MoreProsecco what area do you specialise in? Would you recommend it as a career?

All the OTs - can I ask which areas you work in? I keep looking at OT but I can't work out whether it's for me or not.

Well I did my training over twenty years ago but yes most practical classes were done in bra and pants if the relevant bits were required to be exposed. Recent courses I've been on have required removal of clothes too. Physios don’t mind taking their clothes off (in a professional learning environment obviously Wink). You’ve got to see what’s going on and get used to touching bodies after all, otherwise you’re in the wrong job.

itbemay · 18/08/2018 17:11

I’m an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, having worked in ED, community, prison service and ambulance service (as a nurse) this is the happiest I’ve ever been

MoreProsecco · 18/08/2018 17:19

OP, I work in Diabetes Care; I like it, we're a good team & it's an exciting time with technology & Type 1 diabetes.

Dietetics has it's advantages: I'm usually out of work by 5-5.15, I can't kill anyone, the clinical work is interesting, with lots of areas to work in from learning disabilities to paeds to ICU & health promotion.

But it's a very small profession, and the career structure is limited to mostly band 5 (new graduate) & then you get stuck at band 6. Jobs can be few, particularly if you are committed to a certain geographical area (it took me years to get beyond a locus contract). There are some clinical band 7's, but these are usually managerial posts & I wouldn't have much appetite for being a nhs manager these days.

GoatWoman · 18/08/2018 18:06

I used to be a General Manager which I loved passionately. The hours nearly killed me though and was a definite contributor to the end of my marriage.

In the end I quit due to the relentless bullying from the Chief Exec and Board to lie on targets. I was a whistleblower which gave me no end of grief.

I now work for the NHS in the education sector and adore it!

Keen to hear more from Larry!

Paradyning · 18/08/2018 18:18

Well done you Goat. My mother was also a NHS whistleblower and got hounded out.

Namelesswonder · 18/08/2018 18:26

I’m a Health Service Researcher - great job, would recommend it, don’t envy anyone.

Nurse12345 · 18/08/2018 18:44

I'm a mental health nurse and envy the OT as they get to spend time with patients and don't have to co ordinate and be in charge of a shift managing a team of support staff.
I also envy support workers as although they work very hard they are the ones that really get to know patients, build relationships with them and enable them to access the community too so there is some reward to it.

Doobydoo · 18/08/2018 18:49

When I used to nurse in NHS I liked the idea of SALT and Dietician stuff....still do!

HugeGlassofMalbec · 18/08/2018 19:13

SLT currently working in community but miss working with complex needs. I also envy SLTs who work with young offenders.

gttia · 18/08/2018 19:39

I'm a business coordinator, but envy my boss in estates and facilities. Def the route I'm working on!

JosieB68 · 18/08/2018 19:42

I’m a nurse but in the community, absolutely love my job, a few of my friends who work in the hospital get job envy from me because of the no night shifts but then I do sometimes get envious when they have more days off in a row due to shift work, I work 8-5 mon-fri.

Faster · 18/08/2018 19:46

I’m a theatre nurse and to be honest I bloody love my job. Masses of scope for progression.

nostaples · 18/08/2018 19:48

Great to hear so many enjoying their job. Thank you for all you do NHS workers.

gamerwidow · 18/08/2018 19:49

Information Systems and Data specialist. I envy the contractors who get brought in at twice my salary because we can’t find enough experienced staff!

WhenTheDragonsCame · 18/08/2018 20:02

I'm a HCA on the bank and at university training to be an occupational therapist. Hopefully qualify next year 🤞🏻

I envy the rest of my cohort who have already qualified and have just started their first jobs Grin I am hoping to do a rotation at my local hospital.
