What do you do in the NHS and which other professionals do you work alongside who you have (job) envy for? I'm trying to decide which career I should choose and need inspiration!

Sunshine unfortunately that's what puts me off midwifery. I'm a single parent with very little support so the hours would be impossible for me.

FruitCider · 17/08/2018 22:45

Oh I misread the op!

I actually envy the teachers!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/08/2018 22:53

Admin currently working in the accounts department so alongside financial accountants, management accountants and other levels.

Was admin to Substance misuse team in prison so nurses and support workers, then went on to admin for prison mental health, RMN's, OT's and social workers, then moved to admin for immigration detention centre healthcare, GP, nurses, HCA's, support workers and outside staff, physiology, echocardiography, podiatrist, specialist nurses, alongside prison staff.

Sidge · 17/08/2018 23:03

I’m a senior practice nurse and I work alongside GPs as well as our wonderful support staff (admin, practice manager, receptionists). I also liaise with pharmacists, community nursing staff, health visitors, nursing home staff.

I don’t envy anyone, I love my job. I wouldn’t work in a hospital again for all the tea in China.

SealSong · 17/08/2018 23:04

Social worker in child mental health services (CAMHS).
Don't think that there is any role that I particularly envy.

Cyw2018 · 17/08/2018 23:07

I'm a paramedic, if I had been a doctor I think I would have wanted to be a cardiologist.

Larrythelamb84 · 17/08/2018 23:12

I'm Chief Exec and envy my nurses. They've served their time on the wards, working all hours. Some have worked in the community, as district nurses, and as HCAs. You can have thousands of pen pushers here in the NHS, but you'll never have enough clinicians. My nursing team are my idols!

3girlmama · 17/08/2018 23:18

I'm a practice nurse. Was a district nurse before that and an orthopaedic nurse before that.

I envy theatre nurses at times; they have quiet and compliant patients 😂

NoMudNoLotus · 17/08/2018 23:19

They arent really "your" nurses though@Larrythelamb84

ohfourfoxache · 17/08/2018 23:23

I work in quality and patient safety. I work with lots of nurses.

I envy absolutely no one Wink

FiveGoMadInDorset · 17/08/2018 23:26

I am not sure I envy anyone as I have enjoyed all my various admin roles.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 17/08/2018 23:29

I'm a mental health nurse

I envy the occupational therapists in my service. They've taken all the nicest parts of my role because we never have to time to do them alongside day to day running of the wards. They also get to do vastly more cpd than us because again we can't be released from the ward to attend non mandatory training and even mandatory training takes second place to staffing the ward

SandlakeRd · 17/08/2018 23:35

I am an occupational therapist and I love it! If I HAD to do another job I think it would be SALT but OT is the best really Smile

FaithEverPresent · 17/08/2018 23:36

Theatre nurse. Not all patients are compliant 3girlmama! Grin

If I could have my time again, I wish I’d done OT. Hours are far nicer and you get lots of 1:1 with the patients.

Grumpyoldwoman007 · 17/08/2018 23:41

Another midwife here. I love my job and don’t really envy anyone else but I am looking forward to retirement. I don’t know how midwives and nurses of the future are going to be physically and mentally able to work to age 67.

Rosie1990 · 17/08/2018 23:43

Physio here and wouldn't do anything else. It's a vast and varied career with lots of clinical areas where it's required; it's not all bad backs and knees! The hours aren't bad ( mon-fri) 8:30-4:30 although more weekend work is creeping in but certainly not every weekend or even both days.

tierraJ · 18/08/2018 10:47

The physios just never seem as stressed as the nurses.

They get amazing results & job satisfaction.

I'm thinking of applying to be a physio assistant as their job seems much easier & less stressful than being an HCA like me.
I mobilise patients anyway as part of my job.

I do enjoy being an HCA but I get fed up with doing meals.

littlemissalwaystired · 18/08/2018 11:52

I'm a midwife and envy the paramedics. Grass is always greener!Grin

SheriffCallie · 18/08/2018 11:53

I’m a clinical psychologist in an acute hospital setting. I really enjoy working within a medical team and bringing a different perspective to the discussion.
I don’t really envy any other role and seemthat every role has pros and cons. I would have quite liked to do medicine but, seeing the workload our consultants carry, and how unsupported they are by management, envy isn’t the emotion I experience :(.

SealSong · 18/08/2018 11:57

Larrythelamb.
Sorry your post is really patronising. You envy 'your' nurses? Do you envy their pathetic pay compared to your over £150,000 salary, or their working conditions compared to yours, or their pension compared to yours?
Perhaps you 'admire' the nurses in your trust, rather than envy?

Paradyning · 18/08/2018 14:36

I think that really unfair to jump on the chief exec like that. Their job is extremely difficult and carries a lot of responsibility. Obviously everyone's individual roles carries different kinds of duties and responsibilities.
The thing about the NHS is that we all work as a team. Including the Board.
Remember if someone fucksup it the chief exec who will end up
In the dock.
It's so easy to slag them off.

Paradyning · 18/08/2018 14:38

And I mean the dock literally. The NHS has to comply With many regulations. And the Chief Executive has responsibilities as the employer. Including under criminal law.

StrugglingOn13 · 18/08/2018 14:39

I’m an Intelligence Analyst for my local trauma centre. Absolutely love my job, and envy no other, but have huge respect for all of the clinical staff I work with Smile

Paradyning · 18/08/2018 14:40

And my final two Penneth. I think it's great that an NHS chief exec is on mums net. I think it will give them greater insight into what their staff and patients are actually thinking. If my chief exec was on mn I would think it was brilliant. Not that they would ever admit that.
