Where do you sit in a taxi?

I’ve jst been to Tesco, as a rare treat I went minus children, I don’t drive so I got a taxi home and automatically got in the back as that was what my mum always did when I was younger, as I’m sat in the back on the way home it occurred to me that I probably look like a massive twat, as if I think I’m in a chauffeur driven limo as opposed to a silver Yaris!
Normally if I’m in a taxi there would be a couple of people so it’s never occurred to me before so am I a twat for sitting in the back on my own, where would you sit if you were on your own?

Always in the back - it would be really weird to sit in the front with the driver on your own!

Tink1990 · 17/08/2018 13:07

Always in the back if travelling alone, never occured to me not to however now feel a bit foolish unless other people come on to say they do too loll Grin

Heismyopendoor · 17/08/2018 13:07

Always the back

ChipsAndKetchup · 17/08/2018 13:08

Always in the back and for personal safety always behind the driver.

donetodeath · 17/08/2018 13:11

Oh I feel better now!! I jst felt a bit silly on my own in the back but good to know I’m not the only one

I do not get taxis. For safety. I know of at least two women personally who have been raped or attempted rape. One was my sister.
I get a lift, am accompanied or I don't go. Sad isn't it.

Topseyt · 17/08/2018 13:16

Always in the back.

Occasionally if we are travelling as a large family group then either DH or I may have to sit in the front, but otherwise no. In the back where possible.

amilosingitor · 17/08/2018 13:16

I also sit in the back. Without trying to make a sweeping generalisation, I don't think men get in the front, my DP would get in the front.

amilosingitor · 17/08/2018 13:16

I mean I think men DO get in the front!

pinkmagic1 · 17/08/2018 13:17

I rarely use taxis, but if I do I always sit in the back.

Zoflorabore · 17/08/2018 13:18

Another one who sits in the back. I use taxi's a lot and never give it a second thought.

soupforbrains · 17/08/2018 13:19

I quite often sit in the front and then feel slightly odd and uncomfortable for the journey.

I don't MEAN to, I just seem to get in the front passenger seat without really thinking about it. I NEVER remember from one time to the next how uncomfortable it is and just do it again. but then I'm almost always flustered half ready and in a rush when the taxi arrives so common sense goes a bit out of the window.

@ChipsAndKetchup why always behind the driver? I'm not familiar with that.

Angie169 · 17/08/2018 13:34

I always sit in the front , it is easier to give the driver directions ( old habit I guess from before satnavs )
And I like to chat to the drivers if I am going on a long trip.

meadowmeow · 17/08/2018 13:36

Always in the back - it would be really weird to sit in the front with the driver on your own!

It's absolutely not weird. The car has a front seat for a reason.

gamerchick · 17/08/2018 13:37

I sit in the front next to the driver it wouldn't occur to me to sit in the back.

MarcieBluebell · 17/08/2018 13:37

I do a bit of both. I get travel sickness so sometimes sit in the front.

tangledyarn · 17/08/2018 13:43

Always the front but I have horrendous travel sickness and cant cope in the back..feels a bit strange sometimes but its ok!

FinallyARainbow · 17/08/2018 13:47

DF is a taxi driver so I've always jumped in to the front as a habit, even as a teenager. I'd feel like I was getting a chauffeur if I was in the back.

mostimproved · 17/08/2018 14:52

I guess it depends on the 'type' of taxi IYSWIM - the taxis I get are either black cabs where the front and back are separated and passengers never sit in the front, or an Uber in which case I feel safer in the back and have never ever known anyone get in the front unless it's the car is full.

@meadowmeow cars have front seats because they are used for reasons other than taxis, ie for people who actually know each other!

donetodeath · 17/08/2018 15:03

I asked my DH and he said he’d get in the front if he was on his own, maybe it is a female safety thing subconsciously

Always the back

DrWhy · 17/08/2018 15:05

Automatically the front. Seems like I’m very much thebodd one out though. I wonder if it surprises the drivers!

SneakyGremlins · 17/08/2018 15:07

amilosingitor Good point, I do get in the front! Then again, I know all the local drivers as they used to take me to school.

Jammiebammie · 17/08/2018 15:09

I sit in the front, only as I’m disabled and it’s easier to get in - I do feel like a twat on my own though Grin

MsHomeSlice · 17/08/2018 15:09

I would never get in the front of a cab, I don't know why. Also for preference as a back seat passenger I will sit behind the driver. I can be a terrible traveller though, so I think that position is the one most similar to the "driving yourself" scenario so I feel it's less likely I'll start feeling queasy.

allegedly it's safer to sit behind the driver as they would automatically veer away from any incident to save themselves so the closer you are to them the more likely you would be to survive any impact.
