Help me with ideas.... Thinking about changing my first name!

I’ve been thinking of doing this. I’ve never particularly liked my name and since I’ve ditched my birth family following abuse when I was a child I feel like I’d like to also change my name having moved on with my life.

A few thoughts though- if my current name is in my dc birth certificates/ my marriage certificates/ various wills made by other people then how does it work if I change it- am I no longer identified in the above?!

Will people think I’m wanky for changing my name?

What should I change it to? I’m a 40 year old who likes funky trainers and yoga if that helps! Grin

Have to say I don’t like Maya particularly pronounced Mya buts that’s only because it’s the name of the plastic surgery clinic that’s advertised on tv all the time, I’m probably in the minority with that association though.

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 17/08/2018 13:22

Oh! Didn’t know that the the advert. I liked it because of Maya Angelou.

How about Mia?

Cauliflowersqueeze · 17/08/2018 13:27

Your brain will be so used to hearing the “ASHa” sound in your name that changing it to Sasha would be straightforward.

I like Maya as well but it is pronounced in 2 different ways (my-a and may-a) so I guess that might be a little annoying to have to explain every time?

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/08/2018 13:29

The spelling Mya solves the pronunciation issues though it isn't such a clear link to Maya Angelou.

tobee · 17/08/2018 13:30

Another one thinking if you like Maya go for it. People will probably call you My though, you can't win!

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 17/08/2018 13:36

I love Mia (wanted that as a girls name but ended up having boys!). For whatever reason tho it feels weird giving myself the name I wanted for my kids.

Hi Maya, great to meet you!

I'd be unable to resist signing up to loads of reward cards and tat just to get post in my new name Grin

ggirl · 17/08/2018 14:38

I'd love to change my name , think my parents would be hurt though.

Well done OP . Maya is lovely.

I'd like to make such a minor change , just add and 'a' to the end of mine to change it from a frumpy 60s name to something I actually like.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 17/08/2018 15:02

Brilliant!! That was so quick. Do you feel like a new woman

tobee · 17/08/2018 15:47

Speaking from experience,it caused huge problems.ive documents in different names ,bank accounts ,mortgage all had to be changed..people kept forgetting and Xmas cards for years in wrong name..I then got married and changed surname ,so that added to the confusion,I wish I hadn't bothered ..caused to many paperwork issues

Slimmingsnake · 17/08/2018 15:57

Should of read the full thread....well congratulations and I hope it all works out for you x

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 17/08/2018 16:33

Lol! Sorry it caused you so many problems. I don’t know all that many people or have that many accounts so hopefully it won’t be too bad.

I've had no issues at all, its been 3 years. Hey Maya!

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 17/08/2018 17:23

👋 hello!

I just told my aunts, one hasn’t replied and one clearly thinks I’m nuts. Hey ho!

I just read your post and am thrilled you did the change, hi Maya! I changed my name (my old first name is now my middle name) around 10 years ago. It's been good, actually. Most people adjusted to it eventually 😊

auntyflonono · 17/08/2018 19:57

Lovely name! Now you can introduce yourself with pride! Grin Are you having a middle name? I would go for something unusual like Minerva or Octavia!

MonsteraDeliciosa · 17/08/2018 20:18

Hiya Maya!

Well done for being brave enough to do this. Enjoy the new you!

Shockers · 17/08/2018 20:24

You could hold a ‘name warming’ party!

LukeSkywalkerBoots · 18/08/2018 15:29

Thank you! I feel a bit disheartened by my aunts being a bit offish about it but as my husband said I don’t have anything in common with them and don’t see them so don’t sweat it.

My new middle name is Rose!
