Think someone is using my wifi - how do I check?

KatyMac · 15/08/2018 21:01

It says 6 devises when I logged on to it

But only DH & I are here so maximum it should be my phone, his phone and my computer as his is off

I turned on my kindle and it went up to 7 and when I turned it off it went down to 6 again

I would just change the password but how do I know that's secure (as they much have got the passowrd somehow?)
What do I do?

No kids of yours nearby logged onto anything, have you ever agreed to let neighbours piggyback your system.

Margaurette · 15/08/2018 21:04

I'd just change the password, then log in again on your devices.

Butterymuffin · 15/08/2018 21:05

Can't hurt to change the password though as a first tactic.

ThePricklySheep · 15/08/2018 21:05

Your tv may connect to the internet, plus a sky box?
You don’t have a cctv system that connects to a central box?

ThePricklySheep · 15/08/2018 21:06

Oh and an Xbox would connect too.

Plus a WiFi thermostat eg Hive?

Stripybeachbag · 15/08/2018 21:06

I remember a similar thread in which someone changed the password to something like: payforownwifiyoucheapsod

No idea how to find out though.

Livedandlearned2 · 15/08/2018 21:06

Also printers can be connected. I have an app called fing that shows me who is connected.

StrangeLookingParasite · 15/08/2018 21:09

You can also filter connection by Mac address (unique numeric id of every device).

Katescurios · 15/08/2018 21:09

Do you have:
-smart tv

  • Roku/fire stick
  • Fitbit

If you go to your router website (internet service provider account) you should be able to see the names of qny attached devices.

KatyMac · 15/08/2018 21:15

Yes my printer could be connected if it wasn't off

& DD left the house carrying devises with her

So I have changed the password & I am considering changing the password that I used to get in to change the wifi password (if I can work out how)

There is normally a webpage you can access to see your router settings... it's usually on IP address 192.168.0.1 (or 1.0, or 1.1)

Access it by typing that IP address into your web browser address bar and see what happens (but you might need to consult the manual for your router).

Then you should be able to see a list of all connected devices, but it will not always be a nice list - just a bunch of addresses called 'MAC' addresses. These are the addresses of devices connected.

Since it's obvious you are not very technical, I'm not going to go into loads of details, but you can usually block them one by one (but be careful not to block yourself!).

Typically though, the best solution is to change the PW as others have said, then go through the whole routine again.

Common devices:
Phone
Tablet
Skybox/VirginBox etc
Games Console
Music Streaming Devices
TV
BluRay Player
Printer
Smart Thermostats etc

It's very easy to forget stuff ;-)

rightknockered · 15/08/2018 21:17

I had this and changed my password. Think ex Twat gave out my password

TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 21:20

If you have kids, they often give it out to friends too. Or we have guests stay and often want the password - I find it irritating to be honest!

It's worth changing every few months as a matter of course, but when you have a lot of connected devices, it can be a bit of a pain to reconnect them all.

HollowTalk · 15/08/2018 21:23

Turn off your router. Go into the street and listen for a loud "Oh ffs!"

KatyMac · 15/08/2018 21:24

I am racking my brain to work it out
Of these:
Phone: Mine & DH & DD (who is not in the house)
Tablet: My laptop, DH's & DD (who is not in the house)
Skybox/VirginBox etc - Virgin TV not broadband
Games Console - nope
Music Streaming Devices - nope we have a radio but it isn't logged into anything
TV - not logged i just on Virgin
BluRay Player - nope
Printer - yes but turned off
Smart Thermostats etc - nope

it's odd

192 was how I found out - because I thought we were using loads

I wonder if I can get a list of devises on 192

Could be netflix. I recently disconnected a device I didnt recognise via fing and then when I wanted to use netflix I was logged out.

EggysMom · 15/08/2018 21:30

You've changed your Wifi password; now you need to find where to change the "Admin" password on the router. If you're not sure where to find it, google search eg. "BT Homehub change admin password" and I'm sure you'll find help.

KatyMac · 15/08/2018 21:31

well i just lost 2 devises when I changed the password.....i'll watch if they appear again! My kindle was recoginised the lost when I turned it off & DH's kindle did the same - so now only 1 laptop & 2 phones are on

Thanks everyone

EggysMom · 15/08/2018 21:32

Just to give you a clue to what we have connected (in case these ring any bells):

2 mobile phones
iPad
Kindle
2 laptops
Chromecast
3 wifi security cameras
Now TV box

Kidssendingmenuts · 15/08/2018 21:33

Look on your router and there should be engineer log in details. Type those in your browser and put in the admin password and username and it should tell you which devices are logged on. I know my sky one does, don't forget if you have sky that's wireless and virgin too x

KatyMac · 15/08/2018 21:34

Thanks eggysmum I manged to change that one too

I wonder if my usage will drop too? Hmm

Witchend · 15/08/2018 21:57

Do you have an old phone that might be connected? Dd1 has an old one she uses for a particular game you can't get any more, which still connects, but has no single.

We had to get a new washing machine. We noticed that a number connected to wiFi
Could be something silly like that

KatyMac · 15/08/2018 22:59

Found the connected devises thing

my phone, laptop & DH's phone were all there.....and another one!

I checked if it was my Kindle - it wasn't neither was it DH's & only those devises have been given the new password......while I was messing with it the extra devise just disappearred

Spooky!

KatyMac · 15/08/2018 23:09

@TornFromTheInside I found the MAC address (appears to be no way of blocking it)

& I also looked it up on a MAC address lookup.....which told me nothing Grin

OP posts:
TornFromTheInside · 15/08/2018 23:13

The MAC address is the network card in all your devices. Each device will have a menu somewhere to show you the MAC address of that device. It's worth writing them down if you can find them, so it's easy to know which device is which. But just the PW is the better option for now - you should be ok for a while :-)
