Any GoPro experts out there?

DH is 40 next week, and we’ve had absolutely no idea what to get him, so family are all clubbing together. Budget is around £200 - £250 and he’d love a GoPro.

Is it do-able? I’m not techy so the camera specs are confusing me! I definitely want waterproof...

Any help would be greatly appreciated Smile

We put together to buy my elder son one a couple of years ago
HERO5 , I think it was
Bought from John Lewis
It’s £299 at the moment
He’s a keen mountain biker and absolutely loves it

Thanks for replying Nana

That will be over budget. I wonder if the Hero4 will do the job?

Hero4 requires an additional waterproof case if I remember correctly.

Does he need one with a screen? I have the hero5 session (fully waterproof) and use the phone app as a screen. It’s £199 at Argos www.argos.co.uk/product/5994063?cmpid=GG05X&_$ja=tsid:13535%7Cacid:258-532-5888%7Ccid:219250725%7Cagid:33592995799%7Ctid:aud-484139255741:kwd-263172018715%7Ccrid:284570518514%7Cnw:g%7Crnd:12255251931338976790%7Cdvc:m%7Cadp:1t1%7Cmt:b%7Cloc:1006524&gclid=CjwKCAjwns_bBRBCEiwA7AVGHiOLGHLAij8XNavVGVdvsywJBt1aqY8L2T8gQwtj0QA9iQEpLGQ7bhoCJB8QAvD_BwE

The only disadvantage of no screen is that you can’t see your photos / videos straight away?

It definitely needs to be waterproof as it’ll be used for swimming / snorkelling in the sea. DH is very techy / gadget lover, it’s hard not being able to ask him!

DP has one that looks like www.sony.co.uk/electronics/actioncam/hdr-as20#features_benefits_35607496595930691371079843.

I don't know if it is that model, but what I do know is that he has some sort of Sony video camera thing that he spends far too much time pissing about with when we go mountain biking and diving (with the camera thing in the waterproof case).

I take very little interest in these matters, but I do know that many hours of research went into said purchase, and Sony is DPs favoured brand for such items (cameras, phones, TVs, random electronic shiny things).

Stephisaur · 15/08/2018 20:17

Sandunes they sync to your phone straight away using the camera’s in built WiFi if that helps :)

I took mine snorkelling and just set it on timer to take a photo every 60 seconds (I think) then strapped it on and went in the ocean. I wouldn’t have been checking the screen IYSWIM?

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/08/2018 20:17

Problem is, if he's a techy/gadget lover, he's likely to have specific requirements and a favoured brand, and if you get it wrong, you might as well not bother. It's like buying an Android phone for an Apple fan.

If you buy something, you might have to accept that he'll want to swap it for the one he actually wants, or get him Curry's/Amazon/Other electronics shop vouchers, so he can choose his own?

Funnybunnydog · 15/08/2018 20:18

I bought DS a kitvision splash which has been amazing for the £40 we paid for it. I know they do more high tech expensive ones as well.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/08/2018 20:18

If it's a video camera, you can have them filming all the time and take photo stills from the footage too.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 15/08/2018 20:22

Thanks everyone.

He’ll prefer GoPro over other brands. FIL has been thinking about getting the latest one and DH was jealous! If I did get it wrong I wouldn’t have a problem with it being swapped so it’ll be sensible to get it locally rather than online so that it is easier to exchange.

Useful to know about how they work with WiFi / phones and the automatic options thanks!

The GoPro Hero is a stripped down version of the GoPro Hero 6 premium device, the Hero is the same body just without the 4K filming you get with the Hero 6

And it’s only 199 at Argos

Buy it from John Lewis, and you will be able to exchange it. I love mine. I have even bought a karma grip for mine which is essentially a gimbal, and produces very smooth videos with minimal effort. Some of the big film directors admit to using it to capture very short shots when making a big movie. Get a Hero 5 black as it shoots in 4k, and is compatible with the grip, the drone, and most accesories sold. You can buy bits for it on ebay/amazon for a fraction of the price on the go/pro site. For filming in the water consider getting a 'hero 5 dome' for about £20. You get brilliant results. Also buy a couple of spare batteries and charger on ebay, for just a few pounds so you always have power.
