What would consider ad being in debt?

Surely anyone with a mortgage is in debt

I wouldn't consider someone with a mortgage as being "in debt", even though that's obviously what they are. For me, being "in debt" means having some kind of loan or credit card debt which you would not be able to pay off after your next pay day.
