I have gained about 4st in the last 3 years. It went on incredibly quickly when I became critically ill and was diagnosed with a life threatening condition. My lifestyle has changed considerably compared to my life before my illness, I am a lot less active and the medication I’m on attributes weight gain as a side effect 🤦🏼‍♀️. My weight is now steady and I weigh around 13st 9, and I think I’m a size 16-18 (although I avoid shopping for clothes now and wear lots of stretchy clothes, so in all honestly, I couldn’t be sure of my actual clothes size!)

I’ve noticed over the last few months, that I wake a number of times in the night to move position and find I have pain where I am lying. So if I’ve been sleeping on my stomach, I have pain in my abdomen, it feels like my organs are being crushed. Or if I’m sleeping on my side, my arm will ache and I have to get up slowly from the position. I don’t get pain or discomfort when I sleep on my back.

I am wondering whether this is normal for someone over weight to experience? Or whether I should be concerned. I tend to dismiss and down play symptoms when I’m unwell, hence why I lived with symptoms of my life changing illness for 10 years before it reached the point where it nearly took my life overnight. I don’t know why I do, but I do. Now I’m lying here, getting a bit worried that something more sinister could be going on. I know that no one can tell me that other then a Dr but I won’t be able to see a Dr until the end of the month. But if this is something larger people do tend to experience, it will help put my mind at ease.

Similar weight/size to you, I'd say it's a mattress issue.
How do you feel overall in yourself? Climbing stairs, going to shops, that sort of thing?

I hadn’t considered the mattress, it’s 6-8 years old, I can’t really remember, and feels comfy but maybe as my body has changed, it’s no longer the ideal one for me. That’s a good point!

Generally I feel okay, no problems walking, going up/down the stairs, shopping etc. I feel a bit sluggish at the moment but I feel like I might be coming down with something.

I'm male and weigh a LOT more than I did 30 years ago. Sleeping on my front would asphyxiate me very quickly. Sleeping on my side is fine, as long as my lower arm is bent forward to stop me from rolling. That said, the mattress is at the end of its life as well.
