Ovarian cyst. Feeling worried

After experiencing pain initially thought to be gallstones, an ultrasound showed I have a 4.9cm ovarian cyst. A referral to a gynaechologist is only made if the cyst is larger than 5cm so my GP says it's fine to just leave it. I can't help feeling a bit worried. 4.9 cm sounds quite big to me. Also, what if it's more sinister than a cyst? Any experience or knowledge gratefully received. I've had a series of ailments of late and am getting a bit fed up with it all.

When mine was removed (it was bleeding into itself and threatening to rupture) the sonographer could tell from its structure that it was a cyst and not anything more sinister. I know it's hard not to fret but try to remember that they seem these things day in day out and they are very unlikely to get it wrong Flowers

Hope you feel better soon. Keep an eye out for severe pain in that area, as that was one of the warning signs that mine was acting up.

I had one exactly the same size. They rescanned after 3 months I think, and it had shrunk to 1.5cm. They can tell on the scan if it's benign though, I'm not sure why they rescanned me. Didn't really think anything of it at the time - you could ask your GP to go over the scan report if you are still worried.

I had a 17 x 28cm cyst removed last year!

Is it a fluid cyst or a dermoid one?

Mine was 10 cm x 10 cm when it was discovered at my 12 week scan. They can usually tell from the scan whether it is sinister by the outline of it etc.

I had no symptoms from mine so it was left until I was 17 weeks pregnant and then removed surgically. But if yours is causing pain then surely something needs to be done?

Wow Island. That sounds like a monster! Apparently it is a "simple cyst" which sounds reassuringly boring. I think a 're-scan will be done so I'll make sure I chase that up. Feel like I'm falling apart. Lots of small but troublesome ailments. Maybe it's my menopause "gift". I'm 46 so about the right time for weird symptoms to develop.

Simple cysts are harmless OP
Do not worry
You'll probably get a follow up scan in 3 months
