Did you get swine flu?

Was discussing this with someone not long ago. Myself and a fair few friends got it but this person seemed to think barely anyone had it? Were we just really unlucky?

I got it in November/December 2010, it was snowing badly. I was ill for a solid month and only started getting better around Christmas - apparently had a mild strain, dread to think what full on swine flu would be like!!!
Can't remember anything about it other than I was lying sweating on the sofa, watching One Direction on the X Factor and then hallucinating that they were coming out of the TV and trying to crawl through my ears Confused

ClaryFray · 13/08/2018 11:26

I skipped it luckily, I worked for a call centre for the NHS hot desking at the time, situated above an emergency medical place.

My Dr signed me off sick for six months due to my pregnancy. Sounds grim though and a few of my friends got it.

LinoleumBlownapart · 13/08/2018 11:26

Yes we were on holiday in a cottage in Somerset, my husband drove around looking for a hospital while I drifted in and out of conciousness. He's not from the UK and hates driving there and didn't know the area. He had no choice but to bundle us all in the car and go. It was awful, I really thought I was dying. I was 30 and active and healthy. I got it but none of my family did, several of the staff and children at the school I worked at got it.

Yep. Caught it off DH who caught it from a colleague who was hospitalised and tested.
Horrible. I had a day where I was unaware how ill I was and was wandering around talking nonsense to my mum.

ScrumpyCrack · 13/08/2018 12:32

Good grief these stories are awful.

I don’t know one person that had it and didn’t really hear much about it, other than on the news.

Were the hallucinations fever related?

BrynhildurWhitemane · 13/08/2018 13:02

I didn't, nor ex or DD, but I'm not sure if DS did.

He came home from school with few, if any symptoms, but had slept in the home corner for over two hours. He spent the next couple of days largely asleep, then bounced back with near enough his normal verve.

So not sure, but possibly.

nowshesaturtle · 13/08/2018 13:29

I got it and was put in isolation at the hospital because I was on chemo at the time so they were quite worried.

I think I must have been really lucky, judging by lots of the experiences on here. I felt pretty crap to start with but soon improved and then thoroughly enjoyed the total bed rest and lack of visitors

Kool4katz · 13/08/2018 17:21

No, and I don't know anyone who had it. I'd just had DS and decided not to take the vaccines offered.

TonTonMacoute · 13/08/2018 17:27

All three of us had it, DS was about 10 at the time.

Felt very ropy and ill, MIL kept bringing us nice things to eat, but none of us were hungry. Not as bad as other times I had flu though, when I couldn’t get out of bed.

InteriorLulu · 13/08/2018 17:31

Both DH and I. Our (now retired) GP refused to accept it existed(!) and denied DH had it. Told him to go home and drink plenty of fluids. He was really ill.

He phoned the out of hours service in the end, got a prescription for the anti viral drug and was much better within days.

I also had it, but declined the anti viral due to being pregnant.

YeTalkShiteHen · 13/08/2018 17:36

Yes. December 2010 because some fucking twatwaffle who knew they had it brought their kid (who also had it) for the nursery Christmas party because “I don’t want him to miss Santa”. Angry

Thankfully DS1 didn’t get it. I however spent a miserable fortnight in the house trying to get over it, and then 7 days in an induced coma because my organs were failing. My dad at one point was told to say goodbye!

Have never felt so fucking awful in my life, and I still have to fight the urge to scream at that stupid woman even nearly 9 years later!

AppleJuiceFlood · 13/08/2018 17:40

I had it when I was 16 weeks pregnant with my second child. I caught it at work (I’m a
Nurse) and I actually thought I was going to die I felt so bad.
I spent a week in my bed with a temp of over 40 degrees and had my mum up to look after me and my son while my husband worked. It really was one of the worst experiences of my life. That was just before they started offering the vaccine.
I had awful fatigue after it for weeks. When my daughter is being weird now I tell her it’s because she was boiled in the bag for a week. Thank god she was ok though.

funmummy48 · 13/08/2018 17:44

My youngest daughter had it. She was 4 at the time & was very poorly. Only one of her classmates had it too. It was awful.

thornyhousewife · 13/08/2018 18:23

I had it in Feb 2010 whilst pregnant. Caught it at a work conference and a large portion of the company was off at the same time.

I remember feeling very unwell.

FreddyFasbear · 13/08/2018 18:33

I was immune! I’d had full blown flu the year before ( thought I was dying ) and my boyfriend at the time got Swine Flu. It spread round his workplace, confirmation by test when so many got ill. I looked after him and never got sick. I queried this with the nurse dealing with him and she asked if I’d had flu. I said yes and she said, “ lucky you, you’re obviously carrying enough immunity to not be ill!” I was well relieved!

mizu · 13/08/2018 20:08

Incrediblysturdypyjamas - OMG I live quite near Gloucester!!!!!! I'll never know how I got it but will never go to those services again!

BrynhildurWhitemane · 14/08/2018 04:49

I read this thinking that I was lucky not to get swine flu, and I'm now off work with flu like symptoms 😞

IncrediblySturdyPyjamas · 14/08/2018 09:03

Incrediblysturdypyjamas - OMG I live quite near Gloucester!!!!!! I'll never know how I got it but will never go to those services again!

Me neither.

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 14/08/2018 09:16

Yeah I had it over my birthday weekend. It was terrible. Worst I've ever felt.

ChairinSage · 14/08/2018 09:19

I caught it from DH, who was a lorry driver at the time. We think he also picked it up from Gloucester services. I have never felt so ill before or since, and DH was is a bad way (but on the positive, it made him give up smoking). It took me 3 weeks to start to feel human again and months to fully recover.

viccat · 14/08/2018 09:39

Yes, I did.
I was finishing my Master's degree dissertation at the time and it was awful, mostly the exhaustion and then the cough.

CheeseTheDay · 14/08/2018 09:41

I had it in late summer 2009. Had never been so poorly before or since.

I was unable to attend my cousin's wedding, and she has never forgiven me. Hardly my fault!

NotAnotherNoughtiesTune · 14/08/2018 17:15

Oh no @RandomMess that poor woman's husband and family.

I can't remember if I hallucinated as everything is very foggy for those few days. All I know is I nearly collapsed after going to the bathroom 10 feet away from me.

The Tamiflu has just been released and I took it but at 5/6 Days in it didn't stop it really.
