If you volunteer, what do you do?

I’ve had a hankering to do something worthwhile lately so I’m wondering about volunteering. I’m particularly interested in any environmental/eco-friendly/climate changey type things. Also would be great if there was something ad hoc or maybe like a monthly beach clean up or something maybe? Something the kids can come along to as well? Tell me about any good opportunities/movements you know about please!

Also just want to hear about whatever you do, environmental or non-, as I’ve definitely not considered everything!

Used to help with a children's club and at a special school and a charity for children with disabilities.

Then help with groups of old people at a local church building.

Now I'm a Samaritans

I'm not sure where you are based but there is a group called the final straw emsworth who organise beach cleans in places nearby, eg Hayling Island. They have a Facebook page.

Volunteer in a project for recovering addicts as a support worker.

School governor

Frosty6611 · 12/08/2018 21:32

I used to volunteer at a local food bank. Had to stop after a few months as my full time job got in the way but I really miss it

Dumbledoresgirl · 12/08/2018 21:34

I volunteer in a museum archive. It isn't all that worthy, but it is mostly interesting.

PurpleWithRed · 12/08/2018 21:34

Community first responder - volunteer for the ambulance service - and also a first aider with St John Ambulance. Considering standing for governor for our ambulance trust. Interested in helping kids read though so looking into that.

I'm a founder member of a beach clean group and we campaign about pladtic, go into schools etc. It's very rewarding. im in a local volunteer garden group, which is nice to improve the local amenity. I've collected items for foodbanks and homeless charities. I'm a political activist also. I leaflet, canvass, campaign etc. It's all really opened up my life. I'm very involved in my community now and absolutely love it.

School governor.

lucysmam · 12/08/2018 21:50

I run our local Rainbows and Guides, read with some of the KS2 children at dd2's school, and sometimes help with school events.

My favourite's the reading. So many different personalities & seeing the children develop is quite something :) (I also love the way they'll dive out the doors at home time to tell me they've moved up a book band before telling the grown up who is collecting them Blush Grin.

I foster cats in pens in my garden for Cats Protection.

Are there any volunteer roles you can do from home? I've just had a baby so need something that I can do with her around.

underneaththeash · 12/08/2018 22:01

Wow - lots of gliders here. I also set up and now run a rainbows group.

underneaththeash · 12/08/2018 22:01

Guiders - not guilders!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 12/08/2018 22:04

I bake and decorate birthday cakes for children who's families can't afford to do much for their birthday.

Love the idea of cuddling cats and kittens though Smile

I was so close to my dream of becoming a special constable (volunteer police officer) but got rejected whilst waiting for the final stage of the process (background checks) on health grounds (yet passed the medical and fitness with flying colours Angry)

nuttyknitter · 12/08/2018 22:31

I've volunteered on the PTA and been a school governor. I now look after my DGC for two or three days a week!

NalderAndCollier · 12/08/2018 22:39

Trustee and treasurer of a small educational charity. It's mostly paperwork and correspondence with 3 meetings in London every year, but it gives me something to do.

Cleanermaidcook · 12/08/2018 23:04

PTA at school
Sides person at church
Volunteer at scouts
Used to make and sell jewellery for cancer research but sadly no longer have time

ilovesooty · 12/08/2018 23:19

I was a volunteer counsellor and ended up as Chair of a local bereavement charity for three years. When my term finished I stayed on a subcommittee but I'm no longer there - there's an ongoing political situation which made my continued involvement untenable. If and when certain people leave I'd like to return - I miss it.

LoniceraJaponica · 12/08/2018 23:25

So far I have been PTA secretary, Rainbows and Brownies parent helper and parent governor. I have also helped at regular community coffee mornings helping pensioners get online.

Lessstressedhemum · 12/08/2018 23:25

Run a BB company
Run a foodbank
Run a messy Church
Church safeguarder

My ds volunteers with the friends of our local country park. They maintain habitats, monitor wildlife, plant things like Sensory gardens and much more. That might be an idea for environmental volunteering. Coastwatch is always looking for volunteers. They help monitor and maintain our coasts and work in conjunction with the relief.
