Simple as that.

No, but our TV isn't even hooked up to receive any TV channels we have a PC connected to it instead and use that to watch Netflix (with a VPN access to US). Netflix costs less than the license but it certainly wouldn't if I included prime and sky since prime is £96 a year, Netflix £120 and I have no idea how much sky is so confused how you say it is?

CaveyLass · 12/08/2018 19:06

JS = jimmy saville (evil bastard whom the bbc turned a blind eye about).

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 12/08/2018 19:06

Dappy I presumed Jimmy Saville

mummabearfourbabybears · 12/08/2018 19:07

Why are people so against it? I do t really understand. You want to watch Netflix, you pay. You want to watch BBC then you pay. I don't see the issue. How can they get rid of it without replacing it with another charge? All other channels get money through advertising.

NynaeveSedai · 12/08/2018 19:07

I've got no hassle from them for the past 6 years by declaring every 2 years. They do apparently random checks but haven't done to me.

LoniceraJaponica · 12/08/2018 19:08

I don't understand the MN hatred for BBC TV. I watch a lot of crime dramas, and also enjoy period drama and comedy. Most of what I watch is on the BBC. I am happy to pay for my licence, and to be able to watch uninterrupted programmes.

Dapplegrey · 12/08/2018 19:12

Of course, Jimmy Savile. I should've worked that out.
Thank you Cavey & anchor.

WhoWants2Know · 12/08/2018 19:14

I have a license, but I'm debating on whether to carry on with it. I only used it to watch the Apprentice a couple of times last year on iPlayer, so I may swap to NowTV instead

rainingcatsanddog · 12/08/2018 19:14

I resent paying for my tv license. Never listen to BBC Radio or watch BBC TV channels.

I have Sky and would love it if BBC Channels were considered a premium channel that you could opt out of. (I pay Sky £22 for TV, phone and broadband so the £150pa for a TV License isn't good value at all)

TheQueef · 12/08/2018 19:16

I'm old Dapple I still can't get my head around how blatant he was and the scuffle to cover arses.
I think the beeb and Stoke Mandeville hospital got away lightly.

The hate, or my hate at least, is from being forced to support a company I have no desire to support.

You enjoy BBC, you watch the shows etc, you have no problem supporting it. Fantastic.

Now imagine Nigel Farage (assuming you don't support Nigel Target) demanded £12 a month off you and if you don't pay him you'll be labelled a criminal. That's the issue.

People shouldn't be forced to pay for stuff they don't use.

Imagine having to pay for sky when you don't have it...

MrsTommyBanks · 12/08/2018 19:20

I've got a licence. I got fined £450 and had court bailiffs turn up to collect it ( had pretty bad MH issues at the time). And I've been afraid not to have one ever since.

FeminaSum · 12/08/2018 19:26

I don't.

I like a couple of BBC shows but the licence is so expensive that it'd be cheaper for me to wait and buy the DVDs if I'm that fussed about seeing them. Usually I'm not.

I also dislike the expectation that everyone watches it and needs a licence - I have a Netflix subscription and watch on my computer. Cheaper, with far more that I want to watch.

Why are people so against it? I do t really understand. You want to watch Netflix, you pay. You want to watch BBC then you pay. I don't see the issue. How can they get rid of it without replacing it with another charge? All other channels get money through advertising.

The problem is that there's no way to have a TV that receives the channels with adverts but not BBC, so even if you never watch it, if you have a TV picking up live signals you have to pay. Either the BBC should have adverts to fund it like other channels, or it should be an optional subscription service for those who enjoy it and are willing to pay for it. I have nothing against it, I just don't see the sense in someone who has a TV and only watches, say, Channel 4, being forced to pay for the BBC whether or not they want or like it.

Mabelface · 12/08/2018 19:27

I don't. Netflix, Amazon prime and 4od are enough for me. Don't need the BBC.

Vitalogy · 12/08/2018 19:32

How can they get rid of it without replacing it with another charge? All other channels get money through advertising. Just a couple of suggestions, put adverts on the BEEB or separate it from all the other channels? It's not rocket science for them to come up with an alternative but they won't. They're holding on to it for dear life. It's in it's death throes.

kayaking · 12/08/2018 19:51

Channel 4 is part funded by the tv license. So you'd have to stop watching that as well as BBC.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/08/2018 19:52

I didn't when my TV didn't work for 2 years.

NynaeveSedai · 12/08/2018 19:53

The issue is that if you want live TV, even if you don't want to watch BBC and never do, you are expected to pay for the BBC. They need a subscription charge like Netflix does.

Vitalogy · 12/08/2018 19:58

Channel 4 is part funded by the tv license. So you'd have to stop watching that as well as BBC. That won't exactly be a hardship will it! Separate all the channels, what's the problem with doing that?

NynaeveSedai · 12/08/2018 20:01

Channel 4 isn't funded by the TV licence!

rainingcatsanddog · 12/08/2018 20:02

I would personally pay Sky for Channel 4/More 4/E4 as premium channels as I watch their content unlike the BBC.

claireblueskies · 12/08/2018 20:16

@MrsTommyBanks But were you watching live TV at the time? I.e. should you have had a licence?

Rollonweekend · 12/08/2018 21:56

Yes I’ve always paid the licence as I have a tv which gives me access to bbc although I mainly watch Netflix. Am I in the minority?

9amTrain · 12/08/2018 22:00

I don't. I only watch YouTube and Netflix.

MismatchedStripySocks · 12/08/2018 22:00

I do but feel so cross as I never watch the BBC. I only ever watch ITV and Netflix. BBC should be a subscription service.
