Son going abroad with Dad, not on birth certificate

Hi everybody
My son is 7 and going abroad with his dad for the first time in a few weeks.
His father and I weren’t together when he was born so my son has my surname and also due to this he isn’t named on his birth certificate and although they have a good relationship now we’ve just never got round to adding him on.
I’ve been googling what to do about him taking him away as people have said there might be problems at the airport and from what I’ve read I might need to write a letter giving my consent. Does anybody know if this is correct and is it literally just a handwritten note/ typed letter or what? Really don’t want there to be any problems.
Thanks!

if he is not named on the birth cert, a letter might not cut it., The letter is usually from the NRP that is named on the birth cert.
I think you need proper advice on this one.

He will need a letter of consent and possibly be lightly and sensitively questioned to establish he isnt being trafficked. You may also be called to confirm but its likely to be fine.
