Why don't they show films on TV on the weekend anymore?

Does anyone remember at one time they'd show films on TV on Saturday and Sunday afternoons? You could lose a few hours watching a film, I always liked the old epic ones. There was something strangely comforting about them. Now they just seem to show repeats of teattime gameshows, cookery programmes and sport.

Sometimes Channel Five show films, but not frequently enough.

Anyone know why this is?

Film 4 does.

Or London Live - they have some really good, older films.

PinkPepsiCola · 12/08/2018 14:20

Ive never heard of London Live. Is that available on Sky?

ITV always has the Mummy on.

I know what you mean OP, there was something strangely comforting about them. I don't know, but maybe it's because they have channels purely devoted to films of all genres, and think people are spoilt for choice as it is. It's a shame really.

PanPanPanPing · 12/08/2018 14:25

We just have Freeview, so I don't know if LL is on Sky. Actually, I don't even know whether it's available outside of the Greater London area (sorry!)

Knowivedonewrong · 12/08/2018 14:26

ITV2 are showing Star wars A New Hope later this afternoon.

NoelHeadbands · 12/08/2018 14:29

Has ITV finally stopped showing Back to the Future 2 and 3 (never the original one, no)

Do you think one day they’ll let go of The Flinstones and Scooby Doo sequels?

CurlsandCurves · 12/08/2018 14:30

Channel 4 is showing ‘diary of a wimpy kid’ right now!

PinkPepsiCola · 12/08/2018 14:32

They don't even have to be older films really. Just any film. I remember when ITV used to show James Bond films every bank holiday without fail. Now it's just endless repeats of crap.

ITV2 are showing The Smurfs right now. I love The Smurfs!

And Flight of The Navigator is on Film4 shortly. To take me back to my childhood!

Or Lord of the Rings on ITV if you've got a few hundred hours to spare watching it.

Loadsafilms!

PanPanPanPing · 12/08/2018 14:39

The London Live older films are ones which are rarely shown - and frequently I haven't even seen them before. London Live is on 8 on Freeview, currently showing a B&W film called Wonderful Things.

PinkPepsiCola · 12/08/2018 14:42

Flight of the Navigator?! I haven't seen that in years!

Film 4 had My Neighbour Totoro on today. It’s Studio Ghibli season.

MrsFezziwig · 12/08/2018 14:53

Quick check of what’s showing this afternoon:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid (ITV)
Lord of the Rings (ITV)
The Smurfs (ITV2)
My Neighbour Totoro (Film 4, which is non-stop films)
Mermaids (Sony Movie Channel)
The Raiders of Leyte Gulf (Movies4Men)
Mannequin (Paramount Network)
Willing to Kill (True Movies)
The Bargee (Talking Pictures)

I got bored at this point. How much choice do you want? Confused.

MrsFezziwig · 12/08/2018 14:55

That’s just Freeview, btw - presumably Sky would have even more choice.
Unfortunately this is in Chat - otherwise I would say YABVVU.

PinkPepsiCola · 12/08/2018 14:58

That's assuming you've got Sky or Virgin MrsFezziwig
