Madonna, still sexy at sixty???

Just seen that heading (minus the ???) on the front of a Sunday magazine. Is she sexy? What is the meaning of sexy. I think she looks as though, she is trying too hard to look youthful, and failing miserably.

OP posts:
BarefootHippieChick · 12/08/2018 14:14

I think she was sexy in the 80s when she was more normal looking, not so fit and toned, funky dress sense. Once she started working out she just became too 'hard' looking. Personally I think she looks awful now. She could have just grown older gracefully.

iamawoman · 12/08/2018 14:18

I think you can grow old disgracefully without resorting to fillers, lifts, peels etc. And that has nothing to do with ageism, no-one should feel they need to do this to their bodies

DameDoom · 12/08/2018 14:21

Debbie Harry, Barbra Streisand, Helen Mirren and Patricia Clarkson are all sexy IMHO.

HouseOfMouse · 12/08/2018 14:24

Madonna gives me the impression that she really hasn’t coped well with/accepted aging. She doesn’t seem that happy.

sayinggoodbye · 12/08/2018 14:28

How depressing that a group of women on a womens (for the most part) site have collected together to reduce a successful woman to nothing but her looks and to deride her personality (because you know her so well Hmm) throw a cursory amount of ageism in with the misogyny and I call house.

And they say we don't need feminism in this day and age. Angry

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/08/2018 14:29

Women are compared and pitted against each other, in the way Men aren't, you've just done it.

What a load of crap. Of course men are compared to each other! I accept it doesn’t suit your argument to recognise that but - they are.

sayinggoodbye · 12/08/2018 14:33

The onlylivingboy- look at the Idris Alba thread- men are pitted against one another, but if you read through, that "competition " and the judgements are far far far more forgiving. If idris elba were to read it, whilst everyone agreed he's too old, I don't think it would offend him. Whereas here , well, if Madonna were to read it, whilst I'm sure she has thick enough skin to ignore it, she would be within her rights to take great offence at the cruel and personal attacks upon her lifestyle/looks/ personality.

Men are not subject to the same scrutiny m.

SheSparkles · 12/08/2018 14:36

I don’t think she’s ever been sexy, amd I’m old enough to remember her when she first came on the scene in the 80s. She’s just too in your face for me.
I’d say that someone’s like Helen Mirren is way sexier than Madonna, she has that inner confidence that seems to say “I know I’ve got it, I don’t need to prove it”, whereas Madonna has always been more forceful about it.
For me it’s all about someone’s whole demeanour, not just their looks. I say this as a straight woman, I don’t have to find someone sexy myself to appreciate that they are sexy (that’s clear as mud isn’t it 🙄)

EachandEveryone · 17/08/2018 03:41

Ive just been at a party to celebrate her birthday.it was full of young women and gay men all going crazy for Madonna. I was 17 when she first came out.50 now. Tonight they played hit after hit and we never stopped dancing. Her music is so uplifting.

EachandEveryone · 17/08/2018 03:42

And no-one cares what she looks like. The other people ive ever heard mocking her looks have been middle aged women. Why is that?

TheDowagerCuntess · 17/08/2018 05:51

Just googled to see how she's looking these days. She has had so many different looks over the decades.

She looks incredible here.

Madonna, still sexy at sixty???
MozzieMagnet · 17/08/2018 06:09

Not keen on her recent twitter marakesh shots but bitches, she's Madonna!

CoolCarrie · 17/08/2018 07:23

Madonna and Kate Bush both turned 60 this year, and Kate is, and always has been the more talented, sexy and beautiful one, she is the one I’d like to look like ,Madonna not so much.

epicclusterfuck · 17/08/2018 08:19

What about the things she does rather than how she looks?

Munchmallow · 17/08/2018 08:26

Anyway why should anyone seek to be 'sexy' when they are 60 ffs?

Why ever not?! Women in their 60s like to have sex too you know, we don't just shrivel up after a certain age Hmm

catstring · 17/08/2018 08:33

Under his eye, blessed be the fruit etc...

ZenNudist · 17/08/2018 08:46

She does look good but i think for the last decade at least the reporting about her appearance is filled with misogynistic yuk factor of 'omg we used to famcy her and now shes 50/60 etc"

Men on the other hand get a much softer treatment of 'he may be 60 but hes still got it', reports of younger wives normal , not considered freakish like Madonna and her 'cougar' behaviour is. Double standards alive and well.

Helmetbymidnight · 17/08/2018 08:48

Yeah, an eye-opening read. Hmm

mostdays · 17/08/2018 08:52

Madonna is fabulous. She was fabulous at 20, she is fabulous at 60 and she will be fabulous at 80. I would rather emulate her than anyone who has decided their age should dictate how they present themselves, tbh.

MsWinters · 17/08/2018 08:58

What a fucking depressing thread to wake up to. Agree with sayinggoodbye.

SuburbanRhonda · 17/08/2018 09:01

You don’t have to emulate anyone. Just be yourself.

mostdays · 17/08/2018 09:07

Of course I don't have to. I do find her inspiring though. She's never going to sit down, shut up and fade away. I like that she doesn't seem to be 'growing old gracefully'. I'm not a massive fan of her music and I don't look to her for style tips- it's her attitude that I admire. Women like her impress me for their refusal to be what society says a woman should be, if that makes sense?

RoseTheHatt · 17/08/2018 09:07

I don’t really know what she looks like nowadays.

I remember the time she just looked like a bundle of tendons.

HulaMelody · 17/08/2018 09:08

@houseofmouse - I agree: Madonna now isn’t the creative and original force she was, now it’s like mitigation of ageing effects and struggling to remain relevant (that awful bitch I’m Madonna song with Nicki Minaj as one example).

I’ve always loved Madonna’s provocative stance and how she has always fought against the need to be a ‘good’ girl, along with her support for LGBT issues, AIDS etc. So maybe it is another way to rail against society’s view of ageing...but in that case why be so afraid to show a wrinkle or two?

As said in will and grace - now, she may have the face of baby Jane and the body of iggy pop, but she has been there for us through it all.

It would be a shame for Madonna to be seen now as a sad caricature rather than the icon she is.

busyboysmum · 17/08/2018 09:10

I think she's incredibly talented and hard working.

Her body of music is something to be proud of.

I loved her in Desperately Seeking Susan she rocked. And to me she still rocks.
