WWYD: reunion and seeing ex-friend

Secondary school reunion coming up. It's been 10 years since graduation and I only keep in touch with a few. One of them used to be my BFF, but long story short, we are now no longer friends, more like acquaintances (maybe not even). Things didn't end bitterly, but there was no "closure." We haven't seen each other in nearly four years.

I plan to greet politely if and when I see the exfriend. But what would you do when other people (who knew you two used to be best buddies) ask you why you two aren't friends anymore? (People are nosey and I know the question will come up, but I wish they would just shutup and stuff their faces with biscuits)

I doubt they will. They will probably not notice.

People at these things are really nervous and spend the whole evening thinking about themselves and who they have to talk to/avoid. In the nicest way, they don't give a shit about your old friendship.

In the unlikely event anyone asks directly just say "Oh that's nonsense! We're fine!". Roll your eyes and change the subject. It is absolutely none of their business and it is not the place for a post mortem.

I’d just give a breezy non answer like “oh you know, just one of those things sometimes” or “life gets in the way” and change the subject by asking them something about themselves.

If they keep asking, you can always make the excuse of needing another drink etc.

It's been ten years so I wouldn't necessarily expect anyone to still be close to their secondary school best friend. I doubt anyone will mention it. But if it come up, I'd just say you drifted apart.
