Tattoos!?

Not sure where to post this but here goes!

I really want a tattoo that I've had my eye on for a while and I'd like it to be on my forearm not too big but it'll be very noticeable. I just a few questions for others with tattoos already.

Has a tattoo ever stopped you from getting your desired job? I'd like to be a midwife in the far future when my kids are grown. Have you ever regretted a tattoo? Etc.

Things like that? Thank you in advance.

HI OP

I would really love a tattoo too and finally think I'm ready to just go for it!

I think full arm pieces on women look amazing but I don't think I have the nerve for my first one so I'm thinking side of body - ribs to bum, as i want to be able to at least see it!

Just taking the time to design something I want & getting Syked up for it! What design are you thinking of?

Oh and I work in a hospital and see tons of nurses, midwives, doctors with tattoo's - its not an issue in the north west! Plus you can always cover up an arm tatt with long sleeves if need be... Go For It!

Both DH and I work for employers with a “no visible tattoo” , this is strictly enforced.

DD (uni student) does some agency work and they won’t employ anyone with visible tattoos or piercings other than earlobes.

I think visible tattoos can hold you back to be honest.

*”no visible tattoo” policy

I have two tattoos not visible unless in a bikini, I do not judge people with visible tattoos I think they look amazing but I would never get one myself.

It depends on your career choice I guess.
Plenty of places wouldn't employ you for it. I personally wouldn't risk it. Could you have it on your upper arm so it is easier to cover?

egginacup · 07/07/2018 13:19

I have one on my wrist, so I can cover it with long sleeves if I need to. Most jobs are fairly relaxed about these things now though.

As long as it’s somewhere that can be covered up (ie not your face!) you’ll be fine.

Walkacrossthesand · 09/07/2018 07:00

You can't plan on covering with long sleeves in a clinical job - the rule is 'naked below the elbow' for infection control purposes.
I don't think the NHS bans visible tattoos though, but it might restrict other future roles as PPs have said.

I know three people with tattoos (ILs). Every one of them has regretted at least one. DN two ex boyfriends names, no she didn’t learn the first time, older SIL (mother of DN) a badly rendered flower with wobbly text, just really badly done, and younger SIL a design to go with a video game she used to play that now, in her 40s, dates her and “looks stupid” (her words).

Younger SIL is the only one who has been turned down for work because of her tattoos and says it held her back. She comes from a family/area where most everyone gets tattoos as soon as you are old enough and then moved and changed.

I have visible tattoos and in a professional job, client facing. Depends on your employer.

Fluffybat · 09/07/2018 08:24

I'm a teacher and have two. One of my foot which is easily covered and quite a big one on my ankle that I regret getting. School has no tattoo policy so in the summer I have to wear plasters to cover it. Go for back or somewhere easily covered.

DownstairsMixUp · 09/07/2018 08:44

I'm in Kent, student nurse. Pretty much every placement I've had there have been at least 2 members of staff with visible tattoos. I have them to. No one cares. In the community no one cares about the piercings either which in the hospital they do make you have transparent piercings and stuff.

DownstairsMixUp · 09/07/2018 08:46

My midwife had two full sleeves btw, this was in a London nhs trust.

I was in hospital recently and one of the nurses treating me had a beautifully done rose and hearts tattoo on her forearm.
