Would you risk it?

I am almost 6 weeks pregnant and just found out that DFIL, of whom I have had recent contact with, has shingles.

Been to doctor for blood test today as I have not had chickenpox myself and they thought it best to be safe. Of course I will avoid contact with DFIL until he is better.

The thing is, tomorrow I am supposed to be going for dinner with a group of friends and DMIL will be there. Would I be over-cautious to think I should avoid her too on the basis she might catch it from him?

Thanks

I'd avoid as wouldn't forgive myself if something happened because of it (caveat is that I'm not medical at all, so have no idea if that would be necessary!).

It's very hard to catch cp from shingles. Chickenpox is airborn which is why it spreads so fast, with shingles you have to touch the rash.

Being in contact with your Mil is fone, she can't carry it from your fil.

I don't think you can catch chicken pox from shingles, I think it's the other way round

you can catch chicken pox from shingles. You can't catch singles from chicken pox, it's caused by a reactivation of the chicken pox virus, which is why you can't have shingles without first having chicken pox.

I wouldn't risk it.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 31/05/2018 18:38

You do have to touch the blisters to catch chicken pox from shingles so the risk is very low.

If your MIL has ever had CP then there is zero risk of her giving you CP (unless she comes out with shingles, which would be a fluke coincidence & nothing to do with FIL getting shingles).
