I have 2 DCs- 14 and 11. They are still on bloody holidays- is it just me or are these hols going on for ever? I have no child care for Mon and really need to be at work, as i have already taken enough time off over the past 2 weeks. I am thinking of leaving them alone at home for the day (8am-5pm). They are fairly sensible but have never been alone for longer than a couple of hours. WWYD?

Why can't you leave them on their own? They don't need babysitting at that age.

NapQueen · 14/04/2018 10:13

Leave them. No doubt they will be in bed til noon anyways.

Have you only just realised?! Eek.

How sensible are they? Aged 14 and 11 my brother and I would definitely have been okay on our own. My DSes are you her but I suspect they’ll never be sensible enough to be left together Hmm

14 year old at home and 11 year old to friends?

At 14 I was babysitting other people's children.

At 14 my brother was left alone and within an hour had cut his hand so badly (on a tin of beans) that he still has the scar. Everyone would have said he was sensible!

I don't think there's much wrong with leaving secondary age children alone, even all day, but I'd be checking in frequently - will your work make that possible? e.g. hourly WhatsApp? - and banning anything risky in the kitchen (tins, hob if they aren't proficient, etc), or leaving the house.

Or could you palm them off on their friends?

Christ they are 11 and 14 not babies! Just go to work and leave them to it!

You've never left a 14 year old longer than a couple of hours ???
