Our family is in such a dilemma at the moment, we really don't know what to do for the best!
DH has to work in London as he couldn't find a job locally. He's been doing this for a year, travelling down on a Monday morning and coming home Thursday night, working from home on a Friday. He stays at his mums and she's been fantastic, bless her. She really looks after him and loves having him there. However it is doing his head in having to sleep on an air mattress on her living room floor 3 nights a week.
For months we've had the mindset to move closer, so that he can come home every night. But now his company have restructured and he has a new manager, who does not seem to mind him working from home 2/3 days a week. This could potentially mean he only stays at his mums 1 nights a week (or just travels there and back for two days). So we could actually stay where we are!
Pros to staying:
- rent is a lot cheaper, we'd get more for our money
- Kids would not have to be uprooted and probably would not even have to change schools
Cons to staying:
- if dh loses his job for any reason (he fears redundancy as they are making some changes) we would be stuck here without a job, if he got a new job in London they may not be okay with him wfh. We'd have to start from scratch, clawing the money together for a deposit etc.
