traveling during term time

I have been told that I will have to attend a work meeting in October in my home country, all expenses paid.

I have not been home in 8 years and DS (6) has never visited. We are debating what to do. If we all travel we will probably need to stay not less than 10 days, 2 weeks more likely.

I was thinking, would it be better if instead of just filling the leave of absence form I requested a meeting with the HT to discuss the situation?

Sounds like a good plan and I can see why you would use this as an opportunity to take your dc to your home country. Some absences can be authorised and if you explain that otherwise it would be prohibitive due to cost to travel as a family without this opportunity, that this will help maintain family relationships and cultural heritage. I'm sure it will be fine.

Worst case scenario you get fined, but given your expenses are all paid I imagine it will still be cheaper than a full price holiday.
