Ruined school jumpers

DS started reception 3 weeks ago. In that time, 2 of his 3 school jumpers have became stained to the point where they are ruined.

The uniform is a very pale blue jumper, one has been stained all over the front and sleeves from the dye in the homemade play dough they use at school. I’ve tried soaking it, scrubbing it, using Vanish and it’s still ruined, it’s going to have to go into the bin.
The other I have no idea what the stains are but that one is also beyond saving.

Im not going to replace them every few weeks and I don’t particularly want to send DS to school looking scruffy in stained clothes. I assume their classroom doesn’t have overalls/aprons/smocks for messy play.

Should I have a word with his teacher? I don’t want to be “that parent” as I know his teacher will have enough to deal with but I’m getting frustrated with his clothes getting destroyed especially as he’s only been there 3 weeks!

Speak to the teacher.

My guess would be that they do have aprons but that your ds doesn't realise they need to be worn for play dough, if the dye is coming out. You'll need to encourage him to be independent in accessing them but to ask for help if he needs it.

Personally I would speak to the school, I would mention that his clothes are being ruined and could they offer tips to remove offending stains and encouraged them to get child to use aprons. Your child will not be the only one in the class, so are others having clothing ruined?

Yes speak to the teacher - they should have aprons.
But it is reception - they all have stained clothes. they are washed and clean though so don't bin them. Keep one nice one back for photos, concerts etc, and he can wear the rest on 'normal' days. they grow out of stuff so quickly it's not worth throwing away!!

I didn’t think to suggest that to DS - thank you!
I’ll ask the other parents in the playground when I collect him later if they are having the same problem.
I’ll ask if there are set days when they do messy type play and possibly keep the more stained ones for those days.

In all of my years at school we always had smocks. You need to buy a smock and bring it with you and tell the teacher to make sure that your son is wearing it.
