I was in a shop which had a card stand outside it, as I was leaving with my two young children, we knocked the cardstand over (it's a very narrow awkward doorway with a step to street, and the card stand is a bit in the way)
A handful of the cards fell out of the stand onto the wet pavement.
I put the stand back up again and gathered the few cards (maybe 8) off the ground and took them inside
I said, "im sorry but I knocked your stand over and these are the ones that fell out"
The man behind the counter started saying oooh thank you I'm sorry it's usually very stable and someone must have pulled it over...blah blah.."
I tried to say again that it was me but he was faffing and kept talking and rambling about the wind and I couldn't get a word in.
So I just smiled politely and left.
I feel bad now as I should have maybe made him listen to me so I could have offered to pay for the cards (though they were very well wrapped and apart from a few drops of water on the cellophane were absolutely fine, just needed a wipe)
Would you have insisted on paying?
