What does it mean to 'flip' or 'hide' a thread?

I have my threads set to read from the original post to the end, if I flipped them I'd be reading most recent posts first - does that make sense?

And hide means just that, that you won't see it on active conversations, or on the particular forum (eg, AIBU) it's on. I think there may be issues with still seeing it on "threads I'm on" but as I've never hidden a thread I can't be sure.
