DD's Aunt is taking her to a birthday party in two weeks- the birthday girl is the DD of Aunts friend. Just wondering do we buy a card and gift for DD to take? (We don't know this friend or their child) Or does DD's Aunt get these bits because they're friends of hers? Sorry to sound stupid but DD has never gone to a party before so am unsure. If it is us that needs to get these bits that's fine I'm just not sure on the ettiquette!

Ask the aunt.

Phone your aunt, ask what the child might like. You aunt will then either say she is getting her a present already or it will be clear she is expecting you to send dd with a present.
